Moving to the area

My family and I are considering moving to the Columbia area from another state. Are there well-paying, blue-collar jobs in the area?(I'm thinking in terms of railroad, construction, pipeline, heavy equipment operators, etc.) I am in the process of obtaining my real estate license which will transfer to South Carolina. How is the real estate market there? Are houses selling or just sitting on the market with no buyers?
Are there any areas to avoid due to crime or bad schools? What areas are the best, as far as schools, lower cost of housing, less traffic, etc? We are not opposed to living an hour or so from the area either. I would greatly appreciate any help.
