I feel that the age of consent should be 17, as this is when minors become eligible for most legally binding actions

it should be a case by case situation.

P.S. I have noticed the this site has taken off the previous responses on this story. Maybe because they bashed WLTX and their Anti military stance.

Yes the age should be changed to 18, but so should a lot of other laws. Like being able to quit school without adult permission at the age of 17. If we want to change consent age to 18, it should be accross the board.

I feel 18 is right. If both are under 18 that would be 1 thing but a 21 yo or older having sex with a 16 yo ... not sure that should be legal...
I don't see any anti military stance taken by WLTX, if they were off topic then I'm sure that WLTX has a right to clear it out.

THERE WAS NOT ANT ANTI-MILITARY IN THIS SEGMENT. HOWEVER MY POINT WAS , WHY DO THEY REPORT THE 21 YEAR OLD WAS A GAURDSMAN, WOULD THE HEADLINE BE A 21 YEAR OLD TACO BELL EMPLOYEE HAD SEX WITH 16 YEAR GIRL,IF HE WAS A 21 YEAR OLD TACO BELL EMPLOYEE. I DOUBT IT.
I JUST THINK ALL MEDIA NOT JUST WLTX JUMP AT CHANCES TO PUT THE MILITARY ON TV IN A BAD LIGHT.

What do you mean the age of consent is 16? What happened to statutory rape? I guess I have been misinformed. I thought our laws protected children. These were students at a school where their parents thought they left them to get an education, not have sex. We are talking about their coach for crying out loud. Most youths do look up to their coaches. If the coach thinks its cool then it must be ok. Something has got to be done about this law. I am so thankful my youngsters are home schooled.

I am a bit on the fence here. I don't think the law should be changed because of this one incident. There are plenty of people who are sixteen and had sex with someone over the age of 21. I believe if the 21 year old was lets say a janitor, do you think there would be so much hoopla about the law being changed? probally not. I hope the state od SC has plans on building another jail because the jail poplulation will surge if the law changes.

As a military member serving in Afghansitan I don't see it as bashing the military. When the news broke, it was entitled "cheerleading Coach..." From what I have read on WLTX and other news sources is that a cheerleader was taken to the NG Armory where the recruiter and the coach had intercourse in his office while the other NG soldier socialized with the cheerleader. I think that it is noteworthy under these circumstances to mention that NG soldiers were involved. I do believe that their behavior was inappropriate. I don’t feel that the military has been bashed by any means. It’s their behavior that has given us a black eye, not the media for reporting the truth.

I think it should be 18. I didn't realize it was 16. 16 year olds do not realize the magnitude of their actions in most cases. That's why there are so many pregnant 16 year olds! But I can tell you this, if someone over 18 comes sniffing around my daughter, they won't have to worry about the laws. I'm much scarier than any police officer when I comes to my girls.

Hmmm... 18 vs. 16 for consent. I thought that SC's age for consent WAS 18. Must've been on break for that one. Seriously, there are reports in the media currently that tout the idea that todays ten year olds are intellectually and socially the thirteen year olds of 30 years ago. If that's the case, then bumping the age of consent to eighteen is a step backward, however, based on my own experience with teens and preteens in my family and extended family, eighteen year olds seem to have a greater propensity for having better common sense than sixteen year olds, but whoa! If the age of consent is raised to eighteen, and a young woman below the age of eighteen consents to delving into the sexual arena, then the male would become the perpitrator in now a crime. Anyone know how many 17 year old young men & women who are still holding onto the viable title of "Virgin"? Now, assuming that the population of 16 & 17 year olds who are NOT virgins is at least 50%(I've read where that figure would be a whole lot less nationwide), and the age of consent in SC was elevated to eighteen, then when the sexual activities of those teens under the age of eighteen became known, then the establishment would be required to take appropriate action to punish the offender(s). Seems as though the Tax base to support such increased policing and administrative activities would have to be increased for the additional workload brought about by this shift in age. Then again, depending upon your moral convictions, it would Still be the thing to do... or would it??? Fathers, if the 16 year old is your Son, how do you handle him having sex? If the 16 year old is your Daughter, how do you handle it? Same rules or different? Either way, if the age is elevated, be ready for the problems of enforcement, the cost of enforcement, the change in teen attitudes concerning "ducking, dodging and weaving" when it comes to parental supervision, etc. I don't know what the real answer is except that I don't want all these sixteen year olds becoming targets for those who, now educated to the current age of reason, go hunting without fear of recourse. Eighteen sounds good for a lot of reasons, but there will be a price to pay. Is everyone willing to pay it?

I believe that every case is different. In example:a friend of mine was "screwing around" with a guy who was about 6 years older than her since she was either 15 or 16, and 7 years later they're married. So I guess every situation is different, but I don't agree with the coaches "preying" on those students. There's definitely a fine line there on pedophilia. I think anyway.

I have always thought the age of consent should have a clause addressing consent between minors and adults. I think the age of consent should remain at 16 provided the consenting parties are both minors. However sexual contact between a minor and an adult should be illegal. So 16 would be the legal age of consent provided the second party was not 18 years of age or older.

I think that the age of consent should be changed to 18 also. In the case of students, though, it should not matter the age, if they are in school. If an eighteen year old is a student in high school, for an example, is it all right for a teacher to have intercourse with her, or is this another situation all together?

I think the age should remain at 16.Most teenage girls don't even go with guys their age, most of the time girls have a tendancy to go with guys a couple of years older than them. For instance if you have a daughter in the tenth grade(15yrs.old)and she starts dating a guy in the 12 grade(17yrs.old),but this guy turns 18 has sex with your daughter would that be considered rape if she consented to having sex. What most people fail to realize is that if a teenager wants to do something most of the time they will find a way to do it.All I'm saying is that if you have teenagers the best thing to do is try and have a open line of communication,do your part as a PARENT(stop trying to be your childs best friend),and PRAY.My child consenting to sex with another teenager and calling it rape is crazy, but someone forcing themself on my child and getting away with it is RAPE and that's what we need to try and prevent.

This age of consent law should be changed , and should have many many years ago. How many parents have to go through this hell of some twenty or thirty year old pervert trying to get with their 16 year old daughters. I believe until this happens to some politicians daughter only then will something be done!!!!!!!!!!
