I think it is unpatriotic to send our children to school on Memorial Day. Our children should understand how important this day is. What is so bad is they get out for days that aren't that important to everyone. We chose not to send our son to school so that he can show respect to his Great-Grandfathers who fought for this country and for our current service men and women. They should be highly honored this day. God Bless Them, You and This Country!

WEll, if they are going to be sent to school, then at least dedicate the day to the armed services and teach about the sacrifices that have been made by some of our veterans. Maybe if the kids are required to attend school on Memorial Day, they would at least be given a bit of a history lesson on that day. If they stay home, chances are they will just hang out and make no obersvances at all-like most people who have that day off tend to do.

Maybe if we had mandatory military or civil service for all 18 to 20 year olds, we'd have less crime.

Explain something to me....Why do we give the children off to recognize Martin Luther King but not our veterans that gave/give "ALL" of us our freedom?

the reason the kids in lexington/richland district 5 don't have memorial day off is because they get out of school on june 5th, so how silly is it for them to have a day off when they are going to be out of school in a little more than a week?

Now that is a good question. This should be a holiday that is recognized by all not just a few. God Bless our troops!!

Make them go an extra day. My daughter had to go to school today and their last day is Friday. I think next year they can go an extra day and be off for Memorial day.

All of your posts concur with the outrage I feel that these school districts can ignore generations of sacrifice and honor. Rest assured, they know EXACTLY! what they're doing. Why the are allowed to pull this crap is anyone's guess. I'm thinking admin/legislator wimpiness. I just threw up in my mouth a little.

It is more silly to not recognize it. If it wasn't for our veterans, these "Silly School Employees" would not have freedom. Our kid's are doing very little during this last week of school. Now that PACT testing is over nothing else matters.

If the inept legislature hadn't bowed to the tourism industry instead of the keeping the educational needs of our children at the forefront, most of these schools would be DONE by Memorial Day.

And then there are the few soccer moms who, for some reason thought by starting schools later would equal a longer summer vacation. DUH, two weeks later start equals two weeks later end.

This has been going on for a few years now with these particular school districts. I guess the news media just took their story from last year and made a few changes. Why don't you report on it when the district's actually make a change. Otherwise, heard it before!

This is another example of the archaic and just plain stupid mind set of SC. Mememorial Day is for ALL our fallen soldiers...not just the "Yankees"! This is one of the things that is holding SC back from success in this country. How disrespectful of our soldiers now serving. This is not what we should be teaching our children! It truly makes me embarassed to be living in SC.

So cut out one of the stupid teacher training days and put it before school starts in the fall or after it finishes in the summer. But, do NOT disrespect my loved ones who fought and were injured or died for our country.

Ou school system is suposed to teach and they lost a good example to teach about Respect and Honer . This shows me that some of our Leaders don't respect those that made the ultimate sacrifice sothat they could teach in a free society. I am really teed at this situation. i'll prooving it by voting against any request for funds.

Trust me, those of us who work in districts that had school on yesterday did not like being at school either. I have a sister, brother, brother-in-law and nephew that now serve. My nephew and brother-in-law are now being deployed for the second time in 2 yrs to go back to Iraq. I did not see much celebration of soldiers where I work except with the teachers that were touched personally by the meaning of Memorial Day

Kershaw County Students were also required to attend school yesterday and to my knowledge there were no special programs going on. I choose to keep my daughter home yesterday. My father is retired from the army and her father is in the army reserves and this was a day to honor them and the rest of the armed forces, not spend time in a class room doing nothing.

Slow down Big E. Kids are given time off to not only recognize Martin Luther King Day but President's Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Some schools, not all, have chosen to have their kids attend class for Memorial Day. So don't make it seem like only Martin Luther King Day is recognized as the only time off holiday, because other holidays are thrown in as well. However, we do not need to have a day off to teach our kids the importance of any of those holidays. The lessons can be taught on home on a daily basis so our children can speak of the significance of any of those days as they get older.
