Columbia Smoking Ban Violators Face $500 Fine

The city council on Wednesday is expected to approve a no smoking ordinance that would penalize anyone who smokes in a restaurant or bar. Full Story

That's great that those of you all that smoke have the right too, but I have the right also not to breathe in second hand smoke that could and can kill me faster than what you inhale anyhow. If you want to kill yourselves by smoking your brains out til your eyes pop out of your heads, that's your right to do so, but since I dont smoke and others dont smoke, we have the right not to be around those that do. If you wanna smoke, then do it in your house or apt. or trailer...but dont blow your nasty second hand cancer causing smoke in my face. Have a groovy Day!
Your argument could also be used for car exhaust. As a cyclist, why must I inhale the carbon monoxide that your SUV breathes onto the roadways? Do I not have just as much of a right to breath clean air as the holier-than-thou nonsmokers. I say do away with the gas burning engines and quit polluting the air I breath!!

Great move to improve everyone health; it should have been done years ago.
I also believe anyone who smokes should have a higher insurance premium on their medical plan.
Same for the overweight people or do you only discriminate one way?

I speak of grammar, you refer to punctuation. Did you not notice I misspelled grammar.

It's so easy to say "elect new legislators", but honestly, did you vote in the last city council election on April 1?

Turnout was a dismal 10.8%- so if all you disenfranchised smokers are so mad, you only have to come up with a few thousand votes (in a city of 120,000) to make a difference!

I doubt it'll happen, though. People like to gripe but when push comes to shove they don't do anything meaningful about it.

Sorry to break it to you, but the South Carolina Supreme Court already ruled these types of laws as constitutional. Too bad - so sad.

This is not going to really effect bars...they get more than 85% of their income from booze. That makes them exempt.
The ordinance passed today omits the exemption for bars completely.
All you disgusting smokers can go over to Lexington - I can finally start patronizing some of my favorite Columbia spots now that I won't have to reek of your smoke!
By the way, the economic argument is FALSE. Smokers as a group make (and spend) less money than nonsmokers, so if I were a bar I'd gripe publicly to appease my smoker customers, but secretly I'd be smiling looking forward to the much stronger nonsmoker dollar I could now court.

Typical BS!

Just Like Lexington Medical Center Has a tobacco free Campus....THE WHOLE CAMPUS!!! Parking lot Grassed area's Every peice of property owned surrounding the Hospital Is No smoking!!

Talk about idiotic!! How about the Diesel Ambulances That sit out front back and sides idling exaust. or I-26 that borders LMC in lexington and all the fumes from exaust. I think banning smoking outside is just plain retarded.

Its just another way to hold a smoker down. You can't even smoke in your own vehicle on the property.

Bars and restaurants aren't going to lose money, they're going to THRIVE.

46% of people who only have a GED smoke, versus 9.6% of people who have a college degree. Now who do you think makes (and spends) more money? Someone with a GED, or someone with a college degree?

That also seems to explain some of the moronic arguments being put forth by smokers around here. After all, the statistics show that smokers are less educated than nonsmokers anyway.

So face it smokers, you LOST! Go crawl in your smelly watering holes over in Lexington County!

Wow!

You have an apostrophe in "Grassed area's" but not in "Its"

You capitalize "Diesel" but not "or" at the beginning of a sentance, or your second use of "lexington" (among MANY other capitalization and punctuation errors)

Thank you so much for proving my point that smokers are far less educated, as a group, then nonsmokers!

I didn't make up that government report or the statistics in it. Sorry if the truth hurts, Diane. But leave it to a poorly educated smoker to use name-calling as their strongest argument.

Regardless of spelling or punctuation, the point was easily understood in Habit's post.

Should we try and critique your post now? Your post certainly appears to be one long run-on sentence. Have you ever heard of a period at the end of a sentence?

Those that live in glass houses....well, you know the rest since you are an educated, non-smoker.

You're accusing ME of name-calling? You know, it's not the smoking ban that bothers me. I don't mind stepping outside to smoke in a designated area away from non-smokers. I think that's fair. What really bothers me is the "Holier-Than-Thou" attitude of people like you.

If California can ban smoking in bars and restaraunts (and they did it years ago) so can South Carolina. And for all you folks that say it will take away business, hogwash! Business actually increased in CA because now the non-somking majority could actually go out and enjoy themselves.
