This is truly an unfortunate freak accident. My sympathy to the family.
Accidents like these could be avoided IF some of these older oak trees were allowed to be cut down. If is actually illegal to cut down an oak tree in Charleston without a permit. There are restrictions regarding the cicumference of the trees. If it is so big (I don't know the exact #s) and you cut it down without a permit, you will be fined. So there are a lot of huge oaks along the roadsides (i.e. hwy 61, River Road, Maybank Hightway) that really should come down for safety reasons. I know these are labeled "scenic highways" but how does "scenic" come before safety?

Defintely a freak accident but no less heartbreaking.
I understand the road wasnt the heaviest driven and for a tree to fall just at that time even made it more freakier.
Maybe so. news said it might have been the wind, but there was more to it than just the wind blowing over that heavy oak.

Maybe what god really wanted was the tree...the couple might simply have been in the way?
