In a refreshing and bold move, the playful city board is asking the city council to eliminate the position of Columbia's economic and community developer. The costs associated with this position; estimated at between $140,000 to $168,000, are more than enough to purchase the park property and pay it off in less than four years. The playful city board members are also looking into other revenue enhancements. City stalwarts commend the play board on its initiative and are hoping the board remains committed to its common sense approach.

Ellis getting paid that much to do zip is a total joke. Wondering where all the new businesses are??? Many have gone under in 6 months to a year. Pitiful. Yeah let's put up some more ghetto stores like the dollar store. And exactly what is that design disaster at the Weinel Hardware building? Cheap ass paneling nailed over the siding? Guess it matches the 2 sides white siding, 2 sides beige junk on the other? Discount
hardware store didn't have enough to do the whole building? Nothing like trashing a landmark.

i'm calling this bullshit. ellis get's paid somewhere in the 70's, and even with his benefits he's under 100,000. so the only way to get that figure is to eliminate paul and jackie's positions. i don't know if paul does 'enough', but there have been several new stores to come to town in the last few months (magnolia, patina pony, that place next to dear diva, etc), and jackie is the go-to for many of the events in town.
i doubt the city will eliminate these 2 just to pay for a park.

A flag store? Really? When is the last time you were out in Ctown and saw someone wearing a cowboy hat, especially a 700 dollar one? How about glass replacement business, massage place, red apple, estes financial, etc? More have gone under than have come. Why not hire someone with skills to make Main street like Kirkwood? Main street looks terrible. Rundown buildings, vacant buildings, cheap ass diversions from code for cheap ass "rehabbers". Really hope old DG store is not going to be a new dollar store. Why bother keeping taxes high if you are going to put in loser magnets?

...while i agree that we don't need MORE dollar stores, i do enjoy the good deal I can get now and again at either dollar store without having to leave town.

Dollar general is not so bad, they are more reasonable than marketplace and do carry some reputable brands. However, the other dollar store by marketplace? Gross. China made cheap lead filled junk, unsafe beauty products made from who knows what, food in very small quantity that in the broader scheme of things is not cheaper than the grocery store, just smaller bag or can.

i'm not saying these places will survive here, but i don't think the stores that are thriving in kirkwood would either. there's not enough money being spent here, and we certainly don't have the traffic kirkwood does.

What does Ellis have to do with businesses going out of business? nothing.

I'd also note for those of you coming out of a coma, the economy has sucked for over 4 years and many businesses have failed. marketing the area is an important part of bringing in businesses,

First of all, clean up the trashy buildings on Main. The old jewelry store looks terrible with paper hung inside and hanging down. Dumpster has been.there all summer with old metal trash laying along side. Gawdy ass colors of vacant building where pottery place used to be. Botched up cheap ass hoosier rehab over at Gillan building. Apparently Crawford is in trailer/boat storage business at the Distillery building. Love looking at a dozen trailers parked there. By the way, not zoned for that. Landlords here charge way too much for what they have. This is not a busy business district and not high end retail space by ANY stretch of the imagination.

I like this very much. My grandkids never have a place to go when they come visit so I hope that this place is kept clean and that they keep the riffraff out. By that I mean drug users, pimps, teens making out and flashers.

there are two other parks in columbia that your kids could play in (not that legion is a bad park either) and i have never seen "drug users, pimps, OR teens making out/flashing at any of the three parks in town. What crack head area are you hanging out in?

No crack heads that I saw but it's over on the south edge of town. It looked deserted, which was perfect of our needs, but soon after we arrived and settled in a bad element came around. I tried to get some photos of the teens who were mooning but it was too dark.

Agree, so why waist money when Jackie does all his work anyway, 75 grand salary, 20,000 insurance, 50,0000 expense account, dura FICA ect. To much for the return.

How can the city buy anything? It's broke. Sad, that if the Capitol Development Fund had not been raided all these years to pay for employees and police cars, there would be money in there to use to buy that property. That's how the city bought the safety complex and DOP complex at the end of town before Kevin was mayor.

Having a loyal work force supporting you is paramount in ruling an entity. Increase of staff and pay is one path to this goal . You see it at all levels of government fiscal responsibility has not been a high priority to the elected or to the voters as of yet.
