Optimistic and hopeful

Columbia, IL

#1 Aug 25, 2010
On return visits I am a bit concerned. I think I may have given them the benefit of the doubt the first time around, and once the sheen of grand opening wears off, I hope the true colors don't come through. Don't get me wrong, the service is great and all the young women and men involved seem to be working very hard.

However, what has me worried is the ingredient quality and menu. I've had subpar meals both times I've visited. They weren't bad, they were just blah. The salads are a joke considering the location fo restaurant in a huge farm town. They are surrounded by farmers of vegetables and proteins, so why not take advantage and serve local, fresh ingredients. I hope they don't sell themselves short and get blinded by penny pinching. If all Reifschneider's wants to be is a nice bar with OK bar food and a decent selection of drinks, job well done. However, I feel like they are really missing the boat if they don't really strive to keep the food quality high and set themselves apart from the countless good/family owned restaurants with nice atmospheres but crappy food. If they keep their ingredients fresh, local and seasonal, the menu will retain a level of originality with excitement and buzz that you just can't really find in Columbia. It will keep old customers coming and new customers will be interested enough to cross the river. It will take guts to spice it up. They did a beautiful job inside and have a great location and that's why I'm optimistic and hopeful that Reifschneider's will see the light and pull through. They've done a lot right so far. Now it's just time to really think hard and execute the most important part: the food.

St. Louis has a great food culture, so I hope Reifschneider's decides to push the envelope and join in the culture, rather than becoming comfortable with a stagnant menu and subpar ingredients...just like everyone else in this town.

I believe that everyone can either criticize or make nice comments about the restaurant. It's a good thing that they know what they need to improve on. I believe the person who commented made some positive comments along with the negative. If the owner doesn't like it, then they need to evaluate their business skills. Part of running a successful business is looking at your failures and improving them. To ignore gripes or complaints would surely lead to failure.

Well, dropped a 100 bucks there for nothing this weekend and have to say not too eager to ever go back. Have been there a few times and it only gets worse instead of better. 2 and a half hours waiting for food, food cold, maybe 4 or 5 bites served of salad. I cannot figure out why all the problems. Many servers were on duty yet none seemed to actually be doing their job-----more socializing than anything. It is a shame. Would like a decent place close to home.

I have been to Reifschnieders three times since it has opened. Nice atmosphere and good food. Will continue to keep going, I absolutely love the buffalo-ranch pizza. I do think the bartender could have been more generous on the amount of wine in my glass ;)

people like you are why this SITE is a joke. The person gave good and bad opinions. The owner can use these remarks to improve or ignore them.

That's not good. We recently ate there and feel the same way. The service, food, and waiting made me unhappy to say the least. Also, like you, I see the chef (can't be a real chef) gabbing and not worried about all the mistakes he made. Watched other tables wait and complain, too. Our food came out at three different times. Come on!

We ate at the Gorilla Grape last week. Our server had seven tables and was running around while the other servers stood around and BS'd with customers. Took forever to get our drinks and our food.

we waited 10 min. for a menu and the server never did come and take our order, waited on a table that came in after us and gave them their drinks and socialized and totaLLY IGNORED US. WE FINALLY LEFT AFTER 30 MIN. OF BEING IGNORED. will never go back to pricey and no selections. we hoped that it would be a good new rest.as we really need one. totally disapointed.

The wine is the same amount you get anywhere else just the glass does not suck!!! Bigger glass looks like less wine!!!

The woman who greeted and sat us couldn't have been more pleasant, so our first impression was great. The patio is very nice, extremely large chairs. A little too big for me, but hubby was very comfortable. Then our waitress showed up who appeared to be very annoyed to be working the night we were there. We don't like to drop big bucks first time at a place, so we tried the pulled pork sandwich - coleslaw was good, meat tasted like something you could buy in a grocer freezer, fries were cold, hot wings - average and a burger - below average. We really had high hopes of the possibility of getting a good restaurant in Columbia, it's been years since we've had one. We have plenty of cold beer, average burger joints and don't need another. Disappointing!

I was in there last night 09/30, enjoyed the experience. Except the bar was a little noisy. One customer that was just annoying and loud, seen him before think he works at Tinys. Anyway had some good food and great wine. Will be back.

We have gone there for four weeks now and each time it does get worse! The pizza has been burned the last 2 weeks and served us the wrong wings. The bartender is great and the beer is cold but the service is awful! We hope things change back the way it was when they opened.

i have eaten there 3 times not very impressed it was very bland. the menu didnt utilize local grown or raised foods. typical bar and grill nothing special. was really looking for more quality with a actual trained chef or is he ?? service was horrible. staff was freindly just very organized and they seemed confused on proper service technique. two time i saw several people be seated and then ignored no menus drinks nada they finally all just walked out totally.i even noticed table next to me had a order screwed up by kitchen staff . then the new plate was deliverd by the owner while he yapped on his cell phone. he droped off plate with nothing said bad call there. resturant looked great two thumbs up there
