AstroTurf is a brand of artificial turf. Although the term is a registered trademark, it is sometimes used as a generic description of any kind of artificial turf. The original AstroTurf product was a short pile synthetic turf.

Who paid for this? If you read the paper around here they talk like columbia is broke. Why was the old field not good enough for a possible what 7 home games all year! What a waste of $$. Good luck getting local people to support your wasteful spending.

Its paid thru donations from the public. There will be no tax increases to pay for this. The last i heard, the school had received nearly all they needed so far to cover the cost of the field. Way to go Columbia

That's the problem. Football team only plays 4 or 5 games a year on field. Now P.E. classes, soccer, band and all other organizations can use the field. It was paid for by numerous donations and fundraisers. Way to go Columbia!

Who is telling you this is all being paid for by donations?? That is false. As reported in the Republic-Times, the cost for the turf is expected to be $750,000. The School District (taxpayers) will pay $275,000 (35%),“in-kind donations” will pay 15%, and the school district is working a campaign to raise private donations to pay 50%.

This is a classic example of a School Board with the wrong priorities in my opinion.

I agree. Every year class sizes at Columbia schools get larger. Teachers have less time to spend with individual students. Why isn’t raising funds to reduce student to teacher ratio a priority, instead of artifical turf? There are lots of studies that show a lower teacher to student ratio improves education. I have yet to see a study that says turf instead of grass will make our kids smarter.

I would be surprised if Coach Horny is supporting this. He enjoys spreading his seed around too much.

donations for a fake field? seriously? what about the choir department who only has a part time job now? what about expanding that tiny a** library which expand knowledge? why not put it into supplies for the classroom? i CANNOT COUNT how many times i was in high school and teacher noted "now class i bought this with my own money so please please be mindful of that..." or when all the whiteboard markers ran dry and the school wouldn't give the teachers anymore lol! why not put it into building a bigger parking lot seeing as there were student who "registered too late" and didn't even get a place to park??????????
where are donations for this??????????

yet we can come up with donations and tax money for fake grass.

great job picking ONE thing out of the multiple things i listed. but yes it does. indeed you are correct. choir also hosts the 3 day choir dinner that usually sells out every year and concerts that accept donations. do they deserve an auditorium to be built at the actual high school now? no. i don't think so. its unnecessary and we have (should) have SUCH higher priorities. now to my next point, does bringing in fake grass boost ticket sales? help out players? no. whether the football team brings in money or not (which is VERY little money in the grand scheme of things) it's conspicuous consumption and highly unnecessary. i can name off other things in the school that bring in just as much money. it doesn't change anything nor does it mean that said group deserves a 750,000 dollar item which is not needed... at all.

I hope so too. If anyone wants my autograph as i was an all star conference BB player back in the 80's they can have it for free. Its worthless as are all the local kids autographs. What a joke. autographs are ridiculous even for professoinal athletes are celebrities. Who cares if someone signs something? Geez, people are so gullible they will take anything to think they have something from someone famous. That person doesn't give a dammmmmm about the person they signed it for in most cases.

I see this Ronald McDonald look a like at the cardinals game almost everytime trying to get autographs of players. The idiot probably doesnt even have a job and we pay for his food stamps.

Waaaaaa! Waaaaaaa! Maybe it costs a lot of money to keep real grass mowed and fertilized. Wow. Shame on us for trying to have something nice for the school. I think it's great! Can't wait for football season!

So, what? Now you are telling people what they should donate their money for? If they want it to go to astroturf instead of the choir thats their business.

The field will be used not only by the football team. Having this additional space helps out the school. The current field was used only 5-6 times pet year. With turf, it can be used 24/7. The soccer team will use it. The band will practice on it, and use it. Physical education classes will be held on it. Out is going to be used for community events as well. The grass field cost a fortune to maintain. It needed to bee mowed, watered, and fertilized. Those are costs the school no longer. . . have to pay ... The whole community wins with this. Not just the football team.
