More times that none, I have witnessed several city personnel transporting their family members &/or their friends in City Owned Vehicles. You can witness this yourself any time during the morning hours when they are dropping their children off at school, picking them up from a school function, or dropping them off at sporting events. This is a HUGE liability to the city and I am surprised the city would allow such a thing to go on. Am I the only person that sees something wrong with this?

Nope. But nothing will be done until someone gets killed or hurt. That's the way it goes. Very few who are supported in one way or another by taxpayer money seems to have the ability to do the right, ethical thing and instead will justify it and ask for more.

report them to the IRS. if they get the use of city vehucles for private use it is a taxable benefit.

Squad cars, public works vehicles or both? Depending on the circumstance it may be ok, EG: an employee is dropping kids off at school on their way to work. I'm not really sure where I stand on this topic, probably because I'm pretty ignorant to the situation

I just wish these guys driving around in the city trucks would actually do some work. They are out there but where. Rarely do you see them actually working. Must have a good hiding spot, typical Columbia who's your buddy program.

It shouldn't matter if they are dropping their children off on their way to work or not. There are school buses for a reason or find an alternative solution...the rest of us have to. I, too, have a problem with this. Why hasn't more been done to put an end to it? All it's going to take is one accident, and the city will be paying dearly for it.

So...using this same logic...let's say the building inspector is out in his private vehicle and sees a violation, maybe even an emergency. He should go get his City vehicle first?

Here is how u do it. Elect a new mayor and the new mayor fires every one that is salory. Then put in a new rule no one is a loud to take a city vehicle home they have to drive there own car to work and then get in to there cop car or city work truck.

Most of the guys are good workers, it's just a couple deadbeats that makes everyone look bad

People are always going to find something to complain about. Who cares, it doesn't affect you personally in anyway if someone wants to drop their child off at school in a city car. geez you people are the biggest bunch of whiners I have ever met. You search out issues just to bitch about on topix.

Boom you just don't understand, or pay taxes. It involves a liability and a waste of appropriated dollars. I just came from Market Place and the driver of Columia Pubic Works was using vehicle K25 for his own use. Stopped at the bank and then a little shopping. Don't know if he was on break, but at 2:15 pm, maybe there isn't any work and they get paid to do personal errands while on the clock. Like I said, the good ole boy club.

like I said, complainers wanting to complain about everyone else because they are so unhappy in their own life. I pay taxes, and I live in the same world you do. However, I let others worry about their own life, and I worry about mine.
Keep bitchin, you'll get real far ;)

If the building inspector is in his private vehicle then chances are he's off the clock. So I wouldn't expect him to do anything other than to enjoy his time off. Bad Comparison on your part!

Seriously - you're going to sit there and say you've never tended to any personal business while you were working? I will call BS on that all day long. I'm sure there have been plenty of instances where he has had to work later than normal. It all comes out in the wash. Let it go. As for having a city vehicle, it's a perk of the job, get over it. The other "perk" is they also "get" to be available after hours if by chance duty calls. My husband is in sales and has a company vehicle. Managing 2 cars is insane, especially when you have car seats, files and all of your other personal belongings. Think about every time you get in your car, reach for your sunglasses, chapstick, favorite CD whatever.

Now if they are drinking and driving a city vehicle...totally different story IMO. But stopping by the bank and the market place? Get a freakin life...

Miss Manners, Seriously?? Have you ever used a phone at your work to make a call, or used your cell phone to send a text, wrote a personal email, pooped.(that's company time missy, you're stealing!) No, you're perfect. You and your tax dollars are the ONLY ones that fund our city. Damn the city for not electing YOU as mayor of Columbia. We'd all live in a world full of disaster, because the mayor would be more concerned with what waterloo's people are doing wrong rather than taking care of this town. Kinda like your life. If you spent half as much time trying to make the world an ACTUAL better place (and no, complaining on topix does NOT count), then perhaps we'd see some change, or you'd enjoy your life more (so that you didn't have to come bitch at everything that pisses you off).

You sound like a peach, bitter about what everyone else is doing and how "your" tax dollars are being spent. You seek out things that are "against the rules" and you run to topix to complain.

You should be teaching your children not to be such whiney f*cking babies in everyone else's business like yourself.

Good day.

Columbia Mommy, your right, drinking and driving a city vehicle should have the hammer dropped. Like driving a Fire Truck after a few beers at Tiny's? With all the city vehicles where are they, like someone wrote before, you never see them. It's kind of a hide and seek game. Also why doesn't the Public Works Directors "Streets, Water, Parks" ever return phone calls. Maybe their hiding where they can't make phone calls.

Anyone named "boom" has NO merit. And Columbia Mommy, wow, what a bad example you are. First, unethical. Way to go mom of the year! Right is right, wrong is wrong. When you get your head out of the diaper pail, you will realize that I am the taxpayer and paying for the salary, vehicle, gas and liability insurance for this person to do his business during work hours. His boss should call him on his lack of job performance. Unlike your salesman hubby's public or corporate company where his is screwing his company with his waste (I.e. lack of ethics) and passing that bill along to the consumer who has a choice to buy his products that have the cost of his waste, maybe even sale men's girlfriends watches, built into them. Does this help you see the difference? And boom, if you are soooo unconcerned about everyone but yourself, then stop trolling Topix and posting mindless, bitter rants about things that are clearly on the wrong side of right. Wow. Any city, state, county employee or anyone on taxpayer money should always be concerned about the ethics of their behavior and also the perception of them and their unit/department. Without question. With lean times and everyone wanting more of my money that I work for, you're damn right I'll question it idiot doesn't look and isn't right. So should everyone else,
