Does anyone know about a new winery coming to Columbia ?
Possibly

Grant Frierdrich is attempting to be approved by the Monroe County Zoning Board to open a winery on his father's property on Centerville Road. So far he has been unsuccessful at getting the proper zoning.

Isn't a winery where grapes are grown & then made into wine?

His plan does not include growing grapes, or making wine. He wants to have people come sit along the creek or in the barn and sample various wines made elsewhere, and possibly make a purchase.

Sounds like a tavern to me.

I thought from other topics here that he was an alcoholic? is a winery/tavern a good business for an alcoholic?
I also thought he almost ruined the family business by not paying workers and even lost in court for it. is he planning on paying the workers at the winery/tavern?

That place is like deliverance out there...... I bet there are plenty of banjos coming from those woods. Who would want to destroy their car on that shi-hole of a so-called road?

I know him and his family. He isn't an alcoholic. Problem drinker, maybe, but who doesn't make mistakes. Other than the windy, shitty ass road that centreville road is I think its a good idea. People from columbia like wineries. Why drive to waterloo and take a chance driving when we can do something simular in Columbia. I'm all for it.America is built on comebacks.

The zoning board shut Frierdich down last week, voted 3-2 to allow the winery. A four-vote super majority is required, so the request failed.

Can he reapply after awhile? I think it would be a great addition to the town, and maybe it would force somebody to fix that road. As for the tavern comment I heard they wanted to do a limited seating dinners on the weekend, have gazebos scattered around, and possibly revamp the barn that's out there? I think it all sounds very nice and instead of complaining about the what ifs we could try to enjoy and help the growth of the town?
this place sucks

maybe we could open one on gall road. Do you think the mayor might give a shit about fixing that road then? does it ALWAYS take alcohol to get anything done in this town?

yeah thats a great idea. Put a winery on a road that is heavily traveled, kids running around n there front yards by the roads. Alcohol doesnt solve anything but problems. That may be why theres a broke bridge rail at the beginning of gall rd that has been down for about 3-4 months.

Instead of hanging out on topix, shouldn't you be watching your neighborhood bicycle more closely? Lots of people going for a ride....

that was sarcasm in resonse to the other poster. maybe if our elected officials spent less time dealing with stupid crap like alcoholics wanting to open thier own wineries, they could spend time and resources fixing gall road to protect all those kids in the front yards.

I wonder why a man with no community support thinks he can start a service business as risky as a winery. To me its no different than a person that likes to cook thinks all open a Restaurant. I say let him fail! Isn't that the american way? Afterword we can bail out the bank that gives him the risky loan. After all we could use another location for the police to harass the patrons while leaving.

He should annex to the City, then the County wouldn't be involved at all.
