"Doctor" Norlund is an optometrist - ie - not a real doctor - stick to what you know how to do - ie glasses and contacts and leave surgery to real doctors (ophthalmologists)

you are obviously an under educated idiot.Eight to nine years of higher education makes you a doctor. doctors of optometry have more hours of ocular pharmacology in their training than do ophthalmologists. get your facts straight . Your brother is probably an ophthalmologist.

Shah your ignorance seems to be extraordinary. It is always best to wait to speak until a time when you have specifoc knowledge
Dr. Norlund has never fit contacts or glasses. He owns and operates the largest surgical eyecare practice in Indiana and his sister is one of the eye surgeons who works for him.

To my undestanding both specialties are needed to take care of our patients. The only problem I have is with the misrepresentation that optomtrists put forth with themselves being physicians or even surgeons.

The bottom line is that the optom education has a different focus and rightfully so. They should not pretend that they are a physician or surgeon and try to take care of advanced disease states when they can easily and very appropriately refer these cases to people who are more experienced and better trained to handle them.

THe public deserves to know what kind of FORMAL training you have and what you were intially credentialed to do.

Optometrists are physicians- medical science education is the same core as the 1st year of med school. They are NOT surgeons. Dr. Norlund does not perform surgery, he examines and manages patients before and after surgery. A family doctor wouldn't perform surgery on you, and a cardiac surgeon certainly isn't going to see you unless you need surgery. Optometrists are for primary eye care, ophthalmologists are eye surgeons. There's no such thing anymore as a "general" ophthalmologist, it's a very diversified field of surgeries. If you need glasses or contacts, go to an Optometrist. If you have diabetes, or medical eye problems that don't require surgery, see an Optometrist who's comfortable with comprehensive care.( yes, optometrists who practice medically don't like the Walmart eye docs either) If you need surgery, go see an ophthalmologist, but anymore they'll have you see the optometrist that works with them first to determine if you need a specialist. The game has changed in the last 30 years. By the way, your dentist had less schooling than your optometrist, and you probably have no problem calling them "doctor".
