Plagiarism and the City Manager

Has come to my attention that our City Manager has a habit of plagiarism!
What is plagiarism? According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to "plagiarize" means
付o steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
付o use (another's production) without crediting the source
付o commit literary theft
付o present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.
In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterward.

Seems like almost every one of those lengthy columns he had in the Colorado City Record were stolen, word for word, from other people. This is the self-proclaimed "righteous man" who is running our City.

But you cared enough to comment?? Would you care if your child was caught and expelled from school for doing the same thing?

The issue is this--a person's integrity is not just seen in the large ways he or she makes decisions and actions, but in the little things as well. A cheater is a cheater, a thief is a thief, a liar is a liar whether the cheater took a quick look at another person's paper on a test OR cheated on IRS returns. Or whether a thief walked away from a store knowing he/she got a small amount of incorrect change OR participated in a bank robbery. A liar is still a liar when he/she says one thing on the radio show and then does the opposite within two or three hours.(Lessons learned from childhood on up from our mothers and our Sunday School teachers). All those who say that plagarism is no biggie deal are showing that he or she, also, cannot be trusted. When we let such a public and blatant act perpetrated on readership of local news go unmentioned in the light of day, then we all effectively say to PK-(in his own words) "it is no big deal". So if it is ok to steal someone else's words and call them your own, then what else will this person do because it is "no big deal"? The Topix responders that see no issue here have to be seriously trying to fool themselves. When a man cheats in one way and has no conscience about his errors, how many other ways will he also cheat us who he works for? And yes, none of us are perfect, but most of us don't have the power and position over so many people's lives and public money.

I understand from a good source that there are at least two of the authors of original articles that are consulting lawyers regarding the infringement of their intellectual property (that is in the way of plagarized writings) by PK. GOOD FOR THEM!

It is definitely wrong to steal someone's ideas and present them as your own. It is a little thing most people don't pay attention to anymore, it's called character. I think maybe PK should look it up.

ahh-- thanks "You can..." you summed it up completely: CHARACTER. So, from Plato to Jesus to today, a man's character (or a woman's character) is the very essence of how he is to be judged. If character is weak or flawed, then that particular person must be someone his/her that is regarded cautiously.

***my above post has a writing edit needed-- "If a person's character is weak or flawed, then that particular person must be someone that is regarded cautiously." If "it is no big deal" to steal another person's words and CALL THEN YOUR OWN, then what else might this person cheat on? Persons in leadership position are held to a high standard.(agree or not, like it or not)
One of the saddest comments on this topic on Topix, was the one from the person claiming to be the CHS teacher claiming that plagarism is "no big deal" outside of high school. I sure hope that is NOT one of our CISD teachers. We had history of a former CISD teacher changing grades for athletes. Remember that?

Please...no more radio shows for this man. He doesn't even answer the questions...a waste of time in my opinion.

Pete Kampfer stating the Colorado Record quoted him wrong in stating " My contract is with the city council not the people" I'm sure the newspaper will retract or he can write a letter to the editor...

I am positive the paper did not misquote him that was a fantastic quote caught by a reporter that was paying attention and was exceptionally brave because I am sure the Record is a big supporter of the city manager's.

Someone from Colorado City, Texas anonymously sent me a packet of interesting materials, not too long ago. Before doing anything "big" --(like posting all of it, or the bulk of it -- although after considerable thought, I had scanned in and posted two pages of it)-- with it, I privately shared that packet of materials with a few of my local friends: to get their opinions on that material.

Over on one of the threads in the Raton, New Mexico forums on Topix --(see post #37 on the "Pete Kampfer -- FBI guy, or just lying on his resume" thread)-- I posted some observations that two of those friends had made to me, after they had seen that information:

http://www.topix.com/forum/city/raton-nm/TGAS...

For background info: that packet of anonymously-sent materials had largely consisted of detailed scans of several things that Pete Kampfer had apparently signed his name to, as if he had been the originator of the words that ended up being published ...(those words with his byline apparently having been published mainly in the Colorado City Record, either on the web or in print and/or in documents related to Kampfer's time in Paris, TX)... but in addition to the published materials with Kampfer's byline on them, there were also scans of other sources of information (with sources and publishing dates shown)... with those additional materials looking to myself and others a great deal like word-for-word or nearly-word-for-word "originals" Kampfer had later copied.

------

Anyway, if folks in C-City want to see what else is going on in Raton, of late -- including a recall of all five city commissioners -- you can find the main page of Raton's Topix forums here:
