What we're finding out, here in Raton six months after we finally got rid of Pete Kampfer, is that he did quite a bit more damage to this town than even the most cynical of us thought was possible.
The commissioners who hired him have a lot of very ticked off voters, just waiting for March; so we can dump their sorry backsides, once and for all!
That's if the local media coverage doesn't heat up enough to just whisk them off to jail.(We hope!!)
Just one example of what's slowly becoming clear, six months after Pete's exit from Raton: the many closed executive sessions he insisted upon doing virtually everything in, back when he was the city manager, apparently included a totally secret deal with a privately-owned local gas company. Our city leaders are calling it a "franchise" ... but as the man who got Pete Kampfer's actions written up by the Attorney General of New Mexico, and widely reported in the Associated Press afterwards, I'm not buying that language at all. No deal done in secret by any government agency can be legal in this state. Deals done in back rooms can be undone by the AG's office; and secret "franchises" will be questioned, and questioned, and questioned as many times as it takes, to get to what's going on.
It's hard to believe that any such deal was legal on other grounds, too ... but the original point I'm making here is that Pete's damage lingers for a LLLLOOOOONNNNGGGG time. Citizens of Kermit, if you love your town, look closely at any rumor or allegation surrounding Pete Kampfer ... or live to regret it, later, when it turns out to be true!!!
In other news: the city of Raton and surrounding area now has a new newspaper: the Raton Comet. It looks like stories won't go online until they're about two weeks old (if they go by how they run stories in other areas, etc.) so check their web site in two weeks or so. There will be at least one story that mentions Pete and the harm he did.

If the city of Kermit really wanted to "purely do nothing" with their city, as Kampfer claimed when he resigned from Kermit earlier this week, then why didn't the city's leaders keep Kampfer? A huge paper trail exists to show that doing nothing sums the man up.

Here's a small follow-up on everyone's friend and buddy, Pete Kampfer.
Note that Raton's finances are still massively screwed up, in his wake.(As are Colorado City's, I imagine; and those of Kermit, TX.) If you want to see any of the Raton details, Raton's audit can be found here:
A total of fifteen "findings" for fiscal year 2013 -- and that's despite Pete Kampfer's forced exit before that fiscal year had ended. One of those findings having been for Kampfer's self-serving contract: which gave him a roughly half a million dollars, if the city ever fired him. As it turns out, he apparently got nothing; since he ended up resigning his job in Raton. Nevertheless, his old contract is now an audit finding.
While the reporter said Kampfer was in Raton only six months, he was actually there for over a year, in total. It was his next job in Kermit, TX, where he lasted only six months. Perhaps she was thinking of that? Anyway, he was next reported to be in Alamosa, Colorado: as the County Manager there. He has apparently been there about that same period; so, by now, presumably their books are all screwed up, too.
