My wife found this article in the Raton New Mexico newspaper and we thought it was very interesting. Doesn't Mr. Kampfer have a pretty hefty severance package here that our City Council signed off on? And didn't he tell someone in an fairly recent interview that the people in Raton offered him the job, but he turned it down because Mrs. Kampfer liked living here in C-City too much? This below comes from the article we linked also. Why is the man lying again?

It was the severance package that became the sticking point to negotiations between the commission and Pete Kampfer, the city manager in Colorado City, Texas, who was one of three finalists for the Raton city manager position following the city’s initial advertisement of the position. After the interviews in August, the commission hoped to hire Kampfer and began contract negotiations. Earlier this week, Mayor Segotta said the negotiations broke off when Kampfer, citing the uncertainty that would come with the March elections, insisted on a severance package that was more than the commission wanted to give. Kampfer “wanted some insurance” in case a newly elected commission fired him next year, Segotta said.

Why is the City Council putting up with this man?

Nobody on the Council seems to care if this man lies all the time. hey just keep throwing money at him. Like the Keith Hiser (who thinks he is smarter than everyone else in this town) said-he would vote to give that man a raise all week long.

I am glad Rotan is going to have to put up with him from now on.

Those of us in Raton know zilch about this guy ... but we've had to put up with some real winners, in the past; which makes some of us nervous.

My own impression, on seeing Pete Kampfer at the contract signing meeting recently held in Raton, NM, was mostly positive ... but if those of us in Raton should know some things about him, we'd appreciate the "warning". There's a web blog where people from Raton talk about local politics. If any of you feel like stopping by, it's at:

http:// norteno1 dot blogspot dot com /

Know also that the Raton Range newspaper just ran an article or two about his having signed the final contract - so, he's officially "ours" now. Not all of the stories necessarily show up, online, but one that ran in the paper edition said he hadn't yet resigned from the city job in Texas. Knowing when he does that would help us to have a better idea of what his actual start date will be.

Ratonian, ask him about the plagiarism issues he had when he first started in Colorado City. He wrote several articles for our local paper, claiming them as his own, when in fact they were copied word for word from other people. Several authors have threatened lawsuits in fact.

Interesting stuff, TruthSeeker. Thanks for posting that. Always good to have plenty of governmental sunshine and openness - especially when we've been badly burned, far too often in the past!

As to why some of us would have concerns:

Know that the folks who picked Kampfer were five city commissioners from Raton. One of whom is the only elected official. She is currently up for recall. The other four essentially snuck into power via appointments - which were mainly made by three other past commissioners, whom we voters put up for recall, and got rid of ... only to have a judge decide, shortly after Recall Number One, that we citizens wouldn't be allowed to elect our own choices. Lord only knows why. Anyway, that judge forced less than a quorum of left-overs to choose their three colleagues. They're doing such an abysmal job that up until weeks ago, four of the five current commissioners were up for recall.

It appears that one of the main reasons the recall of the sitting Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem, and one other person got cancelled (for lack of a better term) is that there's apparently no precedent in NM for dumping appointees via the recall process. Seems that in a hundred years of NM history, no other city commissions have managed to suck THIS badly!?

There's an election coming in early March. The five sitting commissioners had it in their power, as I see it, to postpone the decision of who to hire as the new city manager, until after those elections. Yet they RUSHED to give Pete Kampfer power ... before they potentially lost their own.

Pardon my/our paranoia, but quite a few of the related details strike me as odd or suspicious.

Some questions for you folks, if our friendly and helpful "neighbors" from Texas don't mind:

Our local paper said that Kampfer's resume says he worked for three years as an FBI "agent". Seemed to me that the local paper went out of their way to qualify that statement as being something that Pete Kampfer had said; not something the paper had verified. It seemed like they worded it carefully; both during the initial consideration process, a few months ago; and again, over the last weeks. As far as you folks know, is there some/any truth to the idea of Kampfer once working for the FBI, as an "agent"?(Or in any way at all, I suppose?)

Over in the "Plagiarism and the City Manager" thread, here on these forums, I read the following (in the first post on that subject):

"Seems like almost every one of those lengthy columns he had in the Colorado City Record were stolen, word for word, from other people. This is the self-proclaimed "righteous man" who is running our City."

Question: could anyone from Colorado, TX please fill me on on what was meant by "righteous man"?

The reason I ask is that the last city manager hired by the current city commission of Raton, NM turned out to be a complete whack-job, in terms of his belief systems. Just one example: acting as a city manager, no less, he wanted to collect money from locals (quietly, from the sound of it) with the stated goal of building a 130-foot-tall statue of Jesus (similar to the one in Rio or whatever) on a local hill that's prominently viewable, all over town. Some think what he really wanted to do was collect a bunch of money from suckers, then up and disappear in the middle of the night. That city manager lasted a whopping 3.5 months; then, under a cloud the commission refuses to clear up or make more clear for us, he suddenly got canned.

My core concern here is that it looks like you're implying that Pete Kampfer may be another such - or that he goes around claiming to be 'special' in a Holier Than Thou way ... and if so, that gives me huge pause (as a person living in Raton, NM) because his hiring was rammed through, FAST, by people who admit to hiring based on "beliefs".

Thank You all for your in put about this individual. Our community is already in shambles and we do not need more drama. I need more information on this asshole. We are a community watch dog group called S.O.R Sons of Raton. Our story begins with an individual who questioned a city government about a suicide epidemic in Raton in 2005. A challenge was issued that caused the involvement of one individual who was demonized for speaking out and being verbally abusive because the government was not listening. A recall election brought down a ruling power that lasted over 15 years which was tainted by a corrupt administration saturated with nepotism and corruption. This asshole needs to leave public service and stick to being a thief. Please keep your trash Texas don't send it our way.

Truth Seeker, we sure would appreciate knowing more about this issue, as ordinances are being written left & right. Some of us question the authenticity of these ordinances as to where they originated. Also, a difference in attitude is quite obvious when the Mayor happens to be absent from the meetings, sort of like it's easier to intimidate the Mayor Pro Tem & the rest of the council. Would this have been something Colorado City might have experienced as well?
Kermit is now in the crosshairs, please help us. Here is my e-mail address hopebbp@yahoo.com I am a very interested citizen of the City of Kermit, & have no affiliations with any government entity.

That is what he DID in Colorado City! The council of Kermit knew what the man did in three cities, and then hired him. The mayor quit I read. Read about Hitler and how he did it, and compare.

Pat in Abilene, I understand he's repeating performances here, I also understand that both Colorado City, TX & Raton, NM have been left with a tremendous debt to pay off thanks to all his buying power. And you are correct 4 of our 5 City Council members voted him in, which is exactly why our elected mayor quit, all of this of course was "Executive Session", so no one else could find out what was going on. Three of the 4 that voted him in did not seek re-election, the one that is left is just a "yes" man. Now we're trying to fill one of the vacancies, there's one guy that Kampfer has been talking to, so some of us think here we have another "yes" man, but some of us are pushing for a lady that he doesn't like as she has already called him a jerk to his face. This lady does her homework, she doesn't just take his word for everything. I was his first enemy so I called him out & threatened me with removal. The second time I got up to speak I wrapped myself in the First Amendment, so he had to sit there & listen, and again I called him out. We don't speak or look at each other, but I still do not want him ruining our town.

Pete wanted everything in "executive session" here too. He choose who he wanted on city council. If he didn't like someone, got rid of them. Got restraining orders against citizens from city hall. BIG LIER. Power hungry.
