Do teens need a curfew at the mall?

Apr 6, 2007 Full story: Roanoke Times 76

“We basically have not had an issue with teens, so our policy is everybody is welcome”

Weekends spent cruising the mall may very well be considered the high school equivalent of a national pastime for teens just looking for kicks or a place to see and be seen. via Roanoke Times

I concur with the above poster who commented on Southpark Mall in Colonial Heights. It HAS turned into a ghetto but that was slowly happening long before it was put on the Petersburg bus route, although that certainly didn't help. It's always filled with a thug element who commit lots of criminal acts (fights, shoplifting, muggings in the parking lot, etc) and in general behave like idiots. And yes, there is a 6 o'clock chaperone policy for those under 18 which was put in place for the very reasons I mention: too many thugs causing trouble.

However, I think a better policy would be to install a dress code: no urban clothing allowed (ie: baggy shirts, baggy pants, Lugz boots, sideways baseball caps, etc). A restaurant in Richmond did this and the problems it had with troublemakers dropped to nothing. Of course, enforcing it would be a problem due to sheer volume. Oh, and it's probably "rayciss" too.

I agree - I want to be able to watch all those teenies in their skimpy outfits, doing their best to get laid and become baby-mommas at 14-15 years old

You really can't think of a better way to spend your evening than hanging out at he mall? Join a sports team or club. Or, heaven forbid, get a job, volunteer....

A person is most sexually active in their teenage years. That is why there are a lot of teenage girls that are pregnant.

I am a teen myself, and I've seen pregnant girls that attend my school. This is the time of our lives where we will experience constant changes within our bodies, raging feelings for other people, wild emotions, and an increase need to be more social with other people.

I just saw this post. For starters I am a "teen", and I can rightfully say that teenagers should have a curfew at the mall. Although I think the rule should be in effect for ages up to and at 15. Also, those of you commenting on this before me who are kids and are misspelling words on purpose, you are all idiots. Learn grammar when debating with someone on a topic. You just make the entire adult community think that they are justified in having laws for teenagers.

Go sit in the nrv mall on a friday and saturday night you will see why teens shouldn't be allowed in the mall without parents/ or someone over 18. They use horriable language, shop lift, have sex outside in the parking lot / bushes. They gather in these groups plotting to start fights and harrass others it is horrable. They are the same group week after week. Parents I guess look at it as free babysitting. I think the parents should be charged when they leave thier 12 and 13 year olds out there and the shop lift and are having sex outside..... I work in the mall and it is a nightmare to us all.

I moved here 3 years ago, and I made a trip to Valley View mall. I was so intimidated even to the point of fearful due to the attitudes and actions of the teens. I changed to Tanglewood Mall where this was not a problem. When I heard there was a curfew imposed, I decided to give Valley View one more try. I have to say that it was like a totally different environment! It has actually become a place where a mom and her kids can go without being fearful. Curfew was the best thing that ever happened to Valley View! The teens complain that they are being discriminated against, but if they acted correctly in the 1st place it would not have been necessary!

Sometimes the way how a teen acts speaks volumes about the parenting of the parents.

Children are children, if the parents let them out and they get in trouble, lock the parents and the kids up.

Im not from here, but I have like three months living here and the only place that teenagers can have fun around, is the mall... all the city is boring... Or do you prefer that they use drugs or something??
