can't imagine these were live ordinance, as us armed forces have not used "cannonballs" since spanish-american war. if these WERE 19th century ammo, the surprise would be why they would be found above ground (in the position shown) after 115 years or longer.

so that DOES make it a mystery, & the homeowner certainly was justified in letting experts take care of it. so the guess that the balls had been placed there recently may make the most sense.

col. heights eh? during civil war, most artillery fire would have come from just south & east of p'burg. to have landed in col. heights (which did not exist during that conflict) would require some very serious overshooting.

slow news days huh channel 6?This happens all the time and the media and the "sitting around hoping for a call bomb squad"make it a big deal.Like when someone spills a cup of bleach and Henrico county has to roll out the hazmat truck with all the fixings to justify owning it.

Perhaps it was that idiot so called Police Chief at Virginia State University who has been known for putting bullets into his gun, backwards.

They still use cannonballs? C'mon - Of course not!! So unless that Fort Lee soldier was at the Battle of freakin' Bull Run I don't think there's any connection to him & those old corroded cannonballs. For cryin' out loud...

Of course you know the grass was seriously due for a mowing when you find Civil War ammunition in it..
