I think the Policeman was wrong, shooting a dog that was enclosed in it's own yard. And because it was a Pit-Bull should'nt have made any difference.
A Pit-Bull is no different from any other type dog.Unless it had been trained to be aggressive.!!

Bull. That's like saying a Great Dane is no taller than other dogs.

I disagree, your saying something about the physical size of a dog and he is talking about a dog's demeanor/temperament.

Both large and small dogs can be nice or nasty but a Pit Bull by nature is no more nasty then a Lab or Great Dane, it's how the dog is raised/trained. The thing about a Pitt Bull is this, it has a VERY strong jaw capable of inflicting bone crushing injuries so when one does bite just as any dog can it does a lot of damage. Could you imagine a Pit Bull with the demeanor of one of them small yapper dogs that always wants to tear your ankles off? Now THAT would be an animal with a predisposition towards aggressiveness.

I have 2 Pits both of which are quite friendly and have never bitten or been aggressive to anyone in 12 years.

The type of dog is irrelevant. The officer should have known before he jumped the fence, he was violating the homeowners rights. Dogs are all territorial and will protect their property. That fence was there to keep people out.
What if the homeowner had been standing there with a gun (after all an intruder had just jumped the fence). The senior officer reported the officer had seconds to act, well the homeowner or dogs were in the same position with seconds to act. Suspicious actively should not give permission for the officer to do whatever he sees fit.
That officer was improperly trained and the comment his boss made insured this.
The city is liable and need to re-think their training.

Maybe the investigators should dig deep into this officer's "past". How did he get along with his former neighbors? Did he enjoy/brag talking about killing strays in the neighborhood?

I hope this guy is innocent of any wrong-doing and cleared, but if he likes killing animals... that kind of mean isn't curable and can't be re-trained.

Police officers are not dangerous people, it's not even in their nature to be the slightest bit aggressive. In fact, police officers are kind, loving, caring individuals that have never, ever intentionally done anyone harm. All these alleged accidents where a police officer has hurt someone, or has shot a dog, are not the police officer's fault. These accidents were the result of improper training. If the police officer goes out and shoots someone, it wasn't his fault. Just like pit bulls, police officers are not dangerous, they are entirely misunderstood. Police officers are god's little angels.

Reverse the situation...civilian/homeowner shoots trespassing police dog. Wrong is wrong, the police officer had no business intruding on the dogs territory, and he definitely didn't have a right to punish the animal for his own ignorance. You can't blame a dog for protecting his territory, proving his love for his family (homeowners) by guarding their home. Be the dog pit bull or chihuahua, german shepherd or border collie, all will attempt to mark/defend what is theirs. That this officer didn't even stop to consider that he instigated the whole situation is terrifying. Do the crime do the time.

The dog was in its yard fenced in by responsible owner and it is shot by a cop. That is a disgrace, if they get by with that watch out
