At our last Town Council meeting, our Superintendent, Ms. Beane, announced that an anonymous source has rained money upon our fair town. This announcement came complete with a disclosure from the Town Council,“not us”. By virtue of the Grant Ferry the children of Colonial Beach will be afforded the opportunity to free breakfast and lunch. Wahoo! In addition, our benefactor has expanded the program from last year and now adults will be able to dine for a mere $2.50. Better yet, this program is not means tested, so all that show up can partake. Is this a great country or what!

Coming to a school cafeteria near you. Federal Pilot Program? There is a few of us out here that worry about the Federal Governments involvement in the everyday lives of Americans. Today, it is now considered a right to have a cell phone and there is a government program to provide one if you cannot afford it. Is it becoming a “right” to a free or subsidized meal from the Federal Government? Currently, there are record number of Americans on food stamps. How long is it going to be before someone in Washington decides the American people are doing a poor job raising our kids and demands to take over that responsibility?

I guess we forget the fact that the federal program is providing meals to children for reasons of starvation. These kids would not eat if it was not for these programs. This is and continues to be one of the biggest problems our country has, lack of family values. It is completely unacceptable that people are not raising children in a healthy environment that promotes proper eating, exercise and morals. It's sad that us tax payers have to foot the bill to keep these kids fed in order for their survival because parents can't get clean, stay out of trouble, find work or frankly give a crap about anyone else other than themselves. I think these meals are good for children, but parents or others should be prohibited.

CB Newbie,

You may be surprised to learn we are not that far apart on this issue. Putting aside the point of if this is not something the Federal Government should be involved in or we do not know where this funding is coming from.

Any disadvantage child, starving or not, should have the support of the community. I would argue, this program is taking resources away from needy children. By allowing access to this program to all comers, it harming the very people you are advocating for, by diverting scarce resources to folks that do not need it. For every dollar spent on someone that does not need the aid and one less dollar for a child that does. This is just a bunch of cash looking for a cause.
