Beach, county may merge dispatch

Feb 4, 2013 Full story: Fredericksburg.com 13

The Colonial Beach Town Council heard a presentation from Westmoreland County Sheriff C.O. Balderson at a recent work session about the idea, which he said would save both the county and the town money and improve public safety.

I think our NEW town council need to do a lot of research before making a big decision like this. Sheriff Balderson is misleading when he states that ALL 911 calls go to the county. This is not the case. Only 911 cell calls are routed and not all of them. Some go to Charles County Maryland or King George. I wonder how many non-emergency calls and hard line 911 calls come into CBPD dispatch versus cell 911 calls? Interim Chief Seay also isnt up to date on his information either.( How long has he been doing this?) Warsaw doesnt have a 24/7 police department and only have 3 full time officers including the Chief of Police. The population is only a fraction of the full time population of Colonial Beach not to mention summer population. Mr Ham, M. Goforth and Mr. Chirello have only lived in town a few years and have NO idea the impact it would have on the citizens as well as the police department AND fire/rescue to change the system from the way it is now. Mr. Curtin seems to be very serious about changing the police department. I wonder why? As for Interim Chief Seay, it sounds like his information may be lacking a little too. I wonder why? I think a very great deal of research needs to be done, maybe from an outside source, before we make anymore changes to our dispatch and police department.

The town should merge with the county, period.

"Save money & improve public safety". Other than the personnel issue, neither the piece in the Fredericksburg.com or the Journal, indicated how many people the change would effect. I can not see the downside of this proposal.

If a citizen dials 911 for a fire or ems emergency on a landline in the Town of CB, that call goes to CBPD, where it is screened then manually forwarded to WCSO for dispatch. This takes some amount of valuable time, and has been a rough spot in the system since WCSO took over dispatch services for town Fire and Rescue many years ago.

You stated that "This takes some amount of valuable time, and has been a rough spot in the system". Guess that's why an officer once told me that when seconds count (in protecting yourself), we (the police) are just 5 minutes away. He also told me that I should protect myself and my family with as much force as necessary. Makes you wonder doesn't it?

Being 5 minutes away and getting there in 5 minutes are different things entirely.

Correct. Depending on the type of 911 call made, it could be 10 to 15 minutes or longer before arrival on the scene.

Just as the journal printed, this is an alternative that the town council asked the sheriff about. It will be up to the town council/manager to decide after looking at everything. I just hope that this occurs sooner than later with the dispatch and then the PD merges as well. Cross one bridge at a time.

..

Its a 3second, one button push to transfer the fire rescue call ONLY. The caller is kept on the line and the dipatcher already has valuble information on thier screen. If needed, police can be dispatched arriving before EMS in most cases. The response time arriving to the scene is an entirely different subject.

The Town of Colonial Beach needs to be very careful whenever dealing with Westmoreland County.
