I was in the boardwalk yesterday and the trash cans were overflowing! Why can't the town come by and dump them. It made the place look like the dump!

Perfect beach day. Holiday weekend. Beach packed by noon. Public Works director Murphy seen there walking around observing all of this. Yet trash cans overflowing by later in the day as you describe. No forward planning ("Maybe we need to plan for a mid-day trash pickup"). No responsiveness ("Hey, it's more crowed than we anticipated. Get a crew down here."). Are you surprised by any of this?

It has always been that way. Remember Those People who used to go to the park on the point.
Everyone complained about the trash.
Remember all public works are off on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays. No money for overtime
Must be a really hard decision to figure out what to do.
Can you make any suggestions for Mr. Murphy??

Suggestion is to quit making excuses like those you listed and do the job. Other communities do it, so why can't ours? Weekends and holidays are the most important days this time of year. Juggle your schedule if you have to. Get creative. Use your brain. Care about the image of the town. Make it work.

yeah build a little flex time in the work schedule. Have 2 employees off on Monday or Friday
and work Saturday during the summer instead. No ot and maybe the cans will get dumped. This is why CB will always be just Cb.

You hit the nail on the head.

I was wondering if PW has the holiday, will the trash stay there until Tuesday?

Hey, lots of places have employees who are required to work holidays on a rotating basis...get with it Public Works! This happens every year at every event and on busy weekends...we are tired of it. I recommend everyone start calling public works and the town manager's office when you see the boardwalk area and beach areas getting trashy. Also call the council members. One time I drove over to Mayor Bone's house and complained about something and it was taken care of right away. Posting here does no good. Take action.

What you really need is a NFEZ "Neat Freak Exclusion Zone" at the city limits. "If you don't like our trash, take a dash!" :) Same thing was going on in the 50s & 60s. Referendum it in November as a tax increase.(I bet it gets defeated:) Like any party the big clean-up is after it's OVER. You could do a comp time deal instead of overtime and not have a budget issue.
Over time a traction for the problem has not garnered MUCH support. Note to "boat people": Attempt to spin the 50 year problem on to the current TM, That will make you dizzy :)

this happens during every big weekend, or event, there just aren't enough trash bins. But, we don't need more the rest of the year. Why not have a dumpster placed during holiday weekends?

Plus, why are people tossing their trash on top of overflowing cans? Take it with you, it isn't hard to carry it elsewhere.

did you know at a town meeting last night the town council has decided to have a hearing to raise the water and sewer for the town residents and is going to advertise to lower the connection fees for the Potomac Landing builders who has been getting a huge discount from the start. It looks like our town citizens are getting the shaft again. Gary Seeber thinks its a great idea and made the proposal after meeting with the developers and promising to find a way to cut their connection fees. Its time for the fixed income residents to be heard on this matter, can you really afford this increase. Look for the advertisement in the paper next week.

I don't understand why we have to put up with this mismanagement every single year - holiday weekend = more trash = the need for more pickup. Period. It's not rocket science. Rotate the schedule. And you want to rebuild the boardwalk and bring more people in? The current management can't take care of the people we have now!!

Remember this issue when it comes time to ask your next council canidate at election time, along with Eleanor Park and the parking signage so far. All are last years issues. Everyone says go to the council meeting and speak up but how times do you have to go? All of these are last years issues. Any properly run business has a "lessons learned" discussion for action items. Geesshh, it getting old fast and it's only the beginning of the season.
Don't you want that grant money????

I agree. Unresolved old business needs to appear on the next agenda until is it addressed, not just dropped into a hole.

I understand PW hired someone just for weekends to keep the trash cans emptied and the bathrooms cleaned. Maybe they better hire someone else, as this person obviously is not up for the job.

Sometimes there is information that is important enough to share and it doesn't make any difference what thread. This information is important enough in my opinion. Also some don't know how to start a new thread.

I have a hard time believing that council met on Sunday night of Memorial day weekend. Others are right, there is a water and sewer thread where this is more relevant. See you there.

As far as the trash is concerned. One man with a truck and a box of bags solves the problem. Its just that simple. If Rob Murphy and Val Foulds cant figure that out I think they both need to be sent packing! In their defense, Rob was a plumber who couldnt run his own business and lost it. How could he be expected to run a sewer plant and day to day public works of a town? As for Val, She was employed and retired from a large banking isstitution. Customer service was her field. She was assistant to the town manager prior to her appointment to Town Manager. With that experience, how do you expect her to Manage an entire town? Its not their fault that they are underqualified and overpayed for their respective positions. Fault belongs with those who put them in their positions and set them up for failure, and the town up for disapointment! A man, a truck, and a box of bags. Yes it is that damn simple!

The trash is also overflowing on the public parking/boat launch on the Point. Since it sat there all night, it is now blown all over the place and into the river. The vultures are picking through the trash. As other posters have stated, this happens every single year... you would think they would catch on that a weekend trash pickup is needed.
