That is correct. Give them to the county

Bill,

Let's get creative here before throwing the school to the County. Let's come up with some options:

1. Lay off Teachers and/or huge paycuts match by a reduction of Administrative pay by twice the percent that the Teachers will get hit by. Every dollar that is raised through taxation requiers a two dollar reduction in salary.

2. End sports, band and other activities. Let the parents fully bear the cost of these programs. Raise the cost of admission to these activities.

3. Keep tax level where it is currently at. To make up for the $400K needed, levy a per Student charge to the families.$1000 per child enrolled in school. If the parents cannot afford this amount PER Student then that child is more than welcome to attend County Schools. The additional money raised will offset the ones who will not pay to begin with.

4. Support Charter Schools. End Public Education in Colonial Beach. Establish a Charter School that charges tuition and hire the best teachers money can buy. Establish a top notch charter school for the truly gifted.

Bring back tuition for students outside Colonial Beach. Town share has been supporting for a number of years. Use to be around a 120 students so do the math need 400K divided by @120 = 333.33 which is still far less than the @ $1800. per child Colonial Beach tax payers are assessed.

$400,000 divided by 120 is $3,333, not $333.

Just combine the Administrative Costs at the top - do away with a private School Superintendent making $100,000 per year for two schools, separate School Boards and staff. Would save hundreds of thousands of dollars. The schools would still remain in Colonial Beach.

I would not pay a dime to send my kid to the school here however I would pay to send him to westmorelamd and there are parents that do that so their kids don't have to go to school here

OOps...OK then add School part of the Boat Tax that the Town reduced in the Personnel Propery Tax would give you another 100K. Look outside the box before you take the easy way and increase taxes on residents.

The school has been here for over 100 years. All of you still decided to move into town limits with the school. If you don't like paying for it you should have chose another place to live. Nobody begged you to live here.

Agree.
If you add 300 plus students to the County, you will have higher county taxes.
Local control would be gone. 1 board member representing CB? Not a good idea.
Two high schools in one of Virginia's poorest counties? Not gonna happen.
You think kids having nothing to do now?? Wait until the high schoolers would have to truck it down to Montross, getting home late from practices and extra curriculars...
There are many creative ways to improve the school, but let's not get rid of our own, independent school system.
Our schools match up just as well (or poorly) to most public schools in the country. Relatively similar graduation rates, college preparedness and admission numbers, SAT scores and SOL scores as some bigger schools.

There appears to be two schools (no pun intended)of thought on our school system. Merge or not to merge. Have the citizens of Colonial Beach sat down and had a discussion on where we would like to go with this and what is best for the children?

It's been going on for 75 years. The process to consolidate would mean all 4 governing bodies have to agree. CB school board, Council, Supes and Cnty School Board)

Thanks and all of that makes sense. Very difficult to get so many people to agree, plus as you pointed out it is a long trip to Montross.

Did have a follow up. Where do the kids that live north of Colonial Beach, but are outside the town limits, go to school?

Penny,
They have historically gone to the Beach, at least the few I know personally. Although, I do know of a handful that attended County schools. Of course, the kids who attended the Beach schools paid tuition. I may differ a little than some independent school supporters in that I believe tuition is way too low. I understand that many who pay tuition, also shop in town, thus paying taxes towards the town, but the burden is obviously less than those who live in and pay taxes in town taxes. The idea of "consolidating" supers has always been interesting but it always seem to lead down the full consolidation route, which I don't think is a good idea. Just my opinion. It's always been a heated debate and probably will be forever.
