All I can say is WOW and WHY. It seems to me you can solve the search for the next and the next and the next chief by doing what most of us here in town want----merge the PD with the sheriff's office. Council, you have started that when you did it with dispatch and by the way I have heard NOT ONE, again NOT ONE complaint. Don't go backwards. We here in town are so ready for it to happen. All you got to do is listen. You really don't even have to ask. COME ON!!!!!!!!

There have been many complaints. you dont think they are going to publicize them, do you? Get rid of thepd and bye bye golf carts.

my question has always been....what happened to the last few qualified Chiefs we had? Did counsil run them out of tow for doing thier jobs? If you read the job description now, the new chief will answer to the town manager and all 7 on the counsil. Good luck whoever you will be.

I vote for the County taking over oversight, while maintaining a sheriff's substation in town. The sheriff would assume the role of "Chief", thus saving thousands of dollars, but the town would still have a short response time. Win-win.

Can you say,(From Mr. Rogers) "Conflict of interest"? I knew you could!
You have had musical chiefs/Town Sergeants for over 50 years. A couple more than once. STP (Small Town Policing) It's a drama :)

Simply said....he doesnt meet the minimum qualifications which means the town counsil either didnt know the job description or didnt research his personnel file before he was appointrd interim chief.

Nothing ventured nothing gained. Have the County/Sheriff draw up a contract and see what your cost will be. I think you will not like the terms or lack of control that you will have over the finished product. You may have already been down that road. There is no free lunch and the loss of control you currently enjoy might not be worth it.

Not that simple.(1)Town charter requires us to maintain a Police Dept. although it does not state how many officers constitutes a dept.(2) The Town must petition the State in order to change the Charter (3) The County has to agree to take the Dept. over. Just saying

Read the reference, you can have a mix and match w/high sheriff chief. I am not real sure how it would all come together, but that's the wonderful thing about contracts you can roll your own :) Someone has tried it, I am sure. Maybe it's un-workable, but it's still on the books :)

West Point tried it.....it didnt work. They reverted back to a PD with a Chief. When making some grant applications by an incorporated town, the police department is required just to name one reason. My problem is that none of this was broke, so why fix it? Our new cousil members decided they knew best.....and acted without training, research or common sense.

That's pretty heady stuff you put forth in regards to actions taken. What information do you have to support your position? One of the problems with the net is not enough documentation of opinions. When evaluating posts I place a high value on SME (Subject Matter Expert) opinion. I have no way of judging your SME level so next comes references cited and sources. My goal is to make sure I am not dealing with a dog or lucky monkey. Was WPs failure relevant to CBs situation? You should be able to figure what you need to reinforce your opinion in this situation and provide good information to sway other peoples opinion.

So what I read is You two do not recommend him as a SME :) Combined you claim you can read his mind and judge his capabilities to the Nth degree :)
Produce credentials attesting to those capabilities Please. You still will have a huge problem overcoming the contrary evidence that is in the public domain elsewhere on line and the public opinion of his friends and family.
You might also note his absence from this thread tends to lessen the veracity of your statements.

Because of the criminal element that lives and visits this town I want a police force that is dedicated to serving the town limits to keep a handle on the level of crime that we have experienced in the past such as shootings, open air drug dealing, murders, etc. The Westmoreland SO does a great job, but they are spread too thin. While the level of crime at Riverwoods has been greatly reduced, it still remains a potential security threat and attractive nuisance and I want a police department close by to respond as quickly as possible when violence does erupt such as that that arose during a spike in activity six years ago where I witnessed a drive by shooting and other criminal activity.
