$17,500 and just how many residential units is it proposed to have? Not hard to see through this one. The ground is worth more than they are offering. Send them packing council!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was shocked by this. If Council approves this, it's malfeasance. If TM recommends this, she should be fired.

Why pick on the TM? She does what Council instructs her to do. Seems to me the same person on council that reccommended the unwed mothers home and the consolidation of police dispatch is the same one behind this suggested loss to the town and its revenue. I think someone needs to evaluate HIS knowledge and intentions.

What a wonderful opportunity for our town. What is the value of an object, when the buyer establishes value? Real estate gets a little more complicated and it is why assessments and appraisals list the land and the improvements separately. The land is a constant, the improvements are subject to more complex considerations. Our old jail is a prime example. Talk about a depressed real estate market! Last time I checked, the market for this type of establishment is a little thin. A prospective buyer point of view and that ever importantly value question would be. What is required to bring the building up to current standards? Plumbing-waste lines, down to the sewer lateral and supply would all have to be replaced. Electrical, shot and out of date. HVAC obsolete, that would have to go. Roof, replace. Lead paint and asbestos removal, which is exceptionally expensive. Contractors in hazmat, envelops the building to create a negative pressure so all dust partials remain in the building during the demo phase. Any violations in is area and it would rain our friends from the EPA, issue citations up the wazoo. What do we get out of a deal? Recognition by a national organization that we are a cultural center is certainly worth something. Increase in employment, tourism and in real estate property values and reduction in the inventory of town owned properties. While some would argue, send them packing, I would urge, if you do not like the offer, counter it!

Ok, so for $15,000 I can take the building down and dispose of it. What is the value of the property then? Alot more than the $32,500 they would have invested. Thats for sure. I want the town out of the real estate business. However I dont think they should give property away!

Nice thought, but bad deal for the town. I will give them 50,000 cash especially if I have no taxes for 5 years!

This is a good idea, I think perhaps a long-term lease at a reduced rental rate, like the history museum i appropriate.....but let's not give away the town's assets!

The town own all this land at the beach, but yet sold a piece of it. Now they are thinking about giving a piece of it away for nothing. Isn't this town in debt? Why would anyone of the council, even think of giving it away at a low price just to be business friendly. Doesn't make sense to me, but who am I. Just a tax paying customer, who is getting double taxed. Unfreaking believable!

By all means, let us wait for a better offer on our old jail. Run those bums out of here! Heck, you know people to knocking down the doors to get all of that real estate on the cheap. Just look at all the property we have sold and the town council is just giving it away. Shoot, when was the last time we got fair market value for one of our town owned properties? Better yet, other than a parking lot and a few allies, when was the last time our town sold any real estate? What is fair market value, when nobody wants it? Here we are with, what 20% or is it 30% of the ground in Colonial Beach is owned by the town. Other than the beach, the rest is just sitting there either not generating income and falling apart or just setting there period. The remainder we are renting out at $10.00 a year and folks can’t understand why the taxes or so high, it’s got to be the Town Managers fault! Surly it can’t be ours!

Giving a pile of assets to one company, does not make you business friendly!

Offering Tax incentives is one thing, giving away valuable property is another. Did Councilman Curtin ever consider the long term benefit to the investors. They are not doing this to feel good about themselves, they are doing it to make money. How much will they make over time because the Town decided to virtually give them the property. Once again an individual making decisions by shooting from the hip, doesn't have a clue

Castrating unruly Town Council members is always great fun! Uttering the Colonial Beach war cry “giving away property” is always in vogue when the discussion turns to town owned property. Put them together…Priceless! Jail Break!! Unused and neglected. If we can find a way to make this happen our old jail will give birth to increased national name recognition, increased employment, tourism and property values. Not a bad return for some old surplus property that is wasting away.

This could turn out to be a great deal for the town if it fills an empty space and brings more interest to the town. But there really should be something else in it for the town. There should be a provision in this sales agreement that provides a percentage of any future profit from the sale of this property minus any cost of improvements.

Isn't the interested party connected with the folks
who have acauired the buildig next door. Seems like longtime investor seeking to have valuable property for future development. Maybe.

Concerns of getting a fair return on our old jail is understandable. We currently have a national non-profit interested in obtain an asset the town owns. If they are successful in obtaining it, their plans of major renovations will enhance the desirably of the immediate area. Drawing in people from all over the country to our fair town would be a bonus. Just the type of organization we should be trying to encourage to move here. Finding an agreement that will benefit both parties should be the goal. I would urge the Town Council to play that get out of jail free card now!

Our houses are not worth much these days. A lot of people are upside down. The only way to change this is to get more interest in this town which means to bring in new people. New people interested in CB means housese will start selling again.
I am one who wants to see change, let them come!
