Facts on the Martinsville & henry County, Virginia area.

#1. 40% of adult population has no High School Diploma or GED.

#2. City and County governments don't get along.

#3. Area has high unemployment because local governments for years protected local family owned textile and furniture jobs. Not that those companies have either closed or shrunk in size, area has high unemployment rate and low skilled workers.

#4. Area just spent $31,000 for a new community slogan called "We love this place", which is the same slogan used by Reno/Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Waste of money there.

#5. School enrollement in both city and county school divisions continues to decline because adults are forced to leave the area to find jobs, so the area basically has no middle class left.

Just some comments from a former resident.

It was reported around 2 weeks ago, that Martinsville City Council and the City Manager were planning an out of town retreat at a "world Class" resort in South Boston. This was at a cost of $199 per person and included fancy meals and lodging all while they were suppose to be there for a planning session. The costs of this to city taxpayers would have been around $9,266. When reporters at the Martinsville Bulletin published details of this trip to a "world class" resort, the city manager and city council quickly cancelled this trip. I guess the city manager, Dan Collins, Mayor Joe Cobbe and others on city council forgot that the city suffers high unemployment, declining school enrollement, declining tax revenues. Just another reason why Martinsville, Va. is bad for business.
