I recently moved to Belleville from East St. Louis and after living there all of my life, I can honestly say I loved living in both places. I attended school at St. Henry's in Belleville from Kindergarden through 8th grade. I then went to Althoff for a few years before i graduated from ESTLSH. I had a lot of classmates(white) growing up that would allow me to spend nights at there houses in Beleville. We went to parties and did things as EQUALS when we were children. White flight is a problem for the St. Clair CO area but what we still haven't face in AMERICA is Racism. As blacks we have a different culture and view on home equity and neiborhood value. If you look in every ghetto you will notice that construction done is mainly controlled by white contractors. Politicians must comply with congressional wants before they do the ppl of the community. How can you expect Belleville to be the same WITH black ppl when we are not given equal opportunity. What happenes is White are running away from the results of YEARS of disinfranchisement. It only effects them when they see it on the surface. It has no effect on anyone as long as it goes unnoticed!

I see that the State will now chip in up to 10,000 for low income people that buy a house in Belleville. Years ago that happened in east St Louis through various LBJ instituted great society programs.
Here is is again...and Belleville is a targeted city
If I had a house in Belleville I would look at what Government housing did to East St Louis and sell my house as fast as possible. The first one on the block got a good price, the second not so well and the third got pennies on the dollar.
Draw your own conclusions

Wow, how did your parents afford tuition to those Catholic schools in Belleville? I heard it's pretty expensive.

You sound like a intelligent person, you are appreciated, instead of griping about everything thats not right yiu took it upon yourself to take action to get your family in a better situation, if only more people would follow your lead

<quoted text>ANd who's fault is that? That a "lone black" child is in an all white area? That hasn't happened in about 20 years? And I'll tell you another thing, I never let the black indigent thugs, who harressed my child, get away with it. I demanded something be done. And it was done. I've dealt with their parents. Told them to keept their little thugs on a leash if they couldn't control them.LOL. Shocking isn't it? LMAO I put a stop to that crap real fast. Told my kids not to put up with it. Put them in karate for self defense. They aren't afraid either. Yeah, that's a "shame" that I have to go to all those lenths to protect my kids while they are at shcool, isn't it?

Not really digging the thread. I've been hearing the sentiment for 40 years. I had to jump in, in response to "Tuition," though. Very condescending question.

In the '80s, my in-laws, victims at that time of Reaganomics, could hardly afford to put decent food on the table. However, sending their kids (several of them, being a good Catholic family) to Catholic schools was a priority. So with, at best, Bologna sandwiches in their lunch boxes, they all went to Catholic school. The necessities were barely covered, but my in-laws thought that was one of the very most important things.

You'll notice that "Frank" never asked my question. I was curious if his parents did the very thing that your in-laws did, that is, sacrifice in order to send their child to Catholic schools, without some form of "assistance."

Something that "others" obviously dont know. If you are a MEMBER of a church that has a school attached to it you get a significant discount in tuition.
IE
You are a member of the Catholic Church that has a school. You are a member in good standing and not a once a year visitor with no membership. You enroll your kid and you pay about half as much as those who just want their kids in Catholic School. FACT.
If you are a member in good standing and approach the school admin and the bishop, you can arrange a sliding fee sort of deal even on your discount if you have been a faithful catholic.
This goes for other religious schools such as baptist churches with schools and etc. Actual members of hte church always pay a very much discounted rate.

Problem is, a lot of these people want things handed to them and to be assisted with no contribution. They want to take and take, but dont want to actually become a part of what they want to use.

I'm not sure whether everything noddy said is true, but I do know this much about one school in particular:

The "tuition" was divided between regular tuition (not tax deductible), and an expected "weekly donation" (which was deductible). Also, if someone, in this case someone who had attended the school and occasionally showed up for mass at the church, went in and pleaded enough, that person's kid could go at a substantial discount.

Frankly, if they were willing to cut the same deal to someone from the "other side of the tracks," who was really motivated to have their kids get a better education than they could get in their town, that'd seem reasonable to me.

I lived in Belleville from May 1994 to January 1999.

Year by year, it seemed as if ESL was oozing into Belleville, like some mysterious slime.

In October 1998, I put my house on the market (actually lost money, even with improvements). Five years equity? Yeah right...not in Belleville.

When "they" move in, the equity in your home moves out.

Belleville is dead. It died many years ago. Accept it and move on.

Where do you live now? Would you ever consider moving back to Belleville?

There are some good prices on houses there now.

Hey Mike, how is life in the trailer park in Arnold, Mo?
Do you still have the trash pickup once a month in front of your trailer. How about the big pond behind your trailer where the water is stagnant and green?
Do you still have to go to the post office to get your mail because you and all your redneck friends have pit bulls running loose and the US mail refuses to enter your subdivision without a police escort?

I see more white trash moving in than anything. Blacks moving in to belleville has nothing to do with Belleville going down hill. Every rapist, murderer, drug dealer, meth addict, you name it to come out of Belleville has majority been white. Hell, look up a list of all the pediphiles in the Belleville area. You would be surprised to know majority if not all are of causation decent, so all of you racist bigots that are worrying about your kids going to school with blacks, need to worry about your white neighbor across the street snatching up your kid on their way to or from school. Has there been a lot of blacks in the news committing murders I'm Belleville? Of course, but there's been just as many whites. Stop using black people as an excuse & grow the fuck up, especially all you whites who claim to love god but hates blacks.

But for you to ask that question was very ignorant at the most. There were many wealthy black families then. It was rare, but there were some. So for you to just assume that this persons family struggled to put them through catholic school & that they may have had some sort of "assistance" shows your stupendousness.

the way i see it ...its not a black or white issue. its a point of trash from all colors coming in, not working, being lazy.. gettting a link card and then complaining that the whole world owes them something. White or black,,they chose to have 3 or 4 kinds, now they want to sit on their lazy butts and have everyone else pay their way.
they scam and cheat neighbors out of hundreds of dollars yet when you ask them about it.. they claim all innocent and they are suddenly sad that you called them out on their crap. You have landlords and managment companies that let people live in dangerours condition yet when you call the management company they refuse to do anything ..you call the landlord and they just ignore you.. this both white and black and i am so sick ofthe crap. I was raised around black and white people and my parents taught me that color is NOT an issue when it comes to how people are..if people are trash then they are just trash-doesn't matter if they are black ,white or purple.. they are freaking trash..

Absolutely not true.

For example,in Belleville's most recent murder, a white man was shot to death at the front door of his home on North 40th St. The suspect is a black man who was an acquaintance of the victim's son.

And every suspect in every recent armed robbery in Belleville has been black.

Sorry to present these inconvenient facts.
