Come on Mom,why are you so against learning spanish. If it has been taught for so many years already, then your daughter shoud be willing to take the class. You can see who rules in this household. She can still take French or any other course later ,if she wants. The school should stick to it's policy.

If you live in Tarrant County see how your kids school measures up. While you are there compare Timberline to the others in the GCISD district (say Heritage El or Dove El).

http://schoolguide.star-telegram.com/default....

Look at the bar in the "Limited English Students" column and compare it to the "TEA CAMPUS RATINGS" score. Seems those with lower "Limited English Students" rank much higher such as Excellent vs. Acceptable.

And to those who are going to call me ugly names, these are the FACTS folks. No slant to the instructors at Timberline. Seems you are having to work much harder than others yet your ratings are lower. Too bad, but respect to you for adapting to massive influx of people who don't speak much English in this area.

This is getting ridiculous.

This is America. We speak English here. Yes, Texas is close to Mexico, but that doesn't mean anything. This is not Mexico. Just like the folks living in Minnesota or North Dakota don't need to learn French just because they live near Canada.

If you want to work here, you need to speak the language here, and that language is English. Just like if you were going to go to Japan, you'd need to speak Japanese, or Germany, you'd need to speak German. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with logic.

I hope these people file a law suit. Foreign language classes are mandatory in most schools, but at least you get to PICK which language you want to learn. You can't force someone to learn a language because you think that's the language they should learn, regardless of whether you believe it's in their best interest or not.

Suppose Chinese was required with their foreign characters. Suppose the government decided that EVERY ADULT MUST LEARN CHINESE. Would you be so eager for mandatory classes then?
Lucy absolutely not. Not Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, Russian, French, etc... Being forced to learn a second language is WRONG no matter what the language is.

When I was in Iraq, my Company Commander was "making a surprise visit" to my area of responsibility. He, an officer, came to me, a Sgt, with these little booklets and said, "You need to give these to all your troops and make sure to lead them in a class." I asked "what was covered in the booklets?" He said "Oh just information about the Iraqis and their culture that we need to learn about and understand." I said, "No, absolutely not!" "Those that want to read it can, but I am not, nor will I force anyone to learn about these people."

I got in a bit of trouble, but my Staff Sgt stood up for me and so the heat died down a bit.

Bottom line, I do not believe that people should be forced to do anything.

This is ridiculous! If they try this with my kids I will not allow them to participate as well. All foreigners, regardless of their country of origin, who come to live here need to learn english. If they refuse then deport them. If my kids want to learn another language of THEIR CHOOSING then so be it - but mandatory? WHEN DID THE GESTAPO ARRIVE IN THE USA AND GAIN CONTROL?!?!

.... I agree she should put her in a Private school... that way the "Gestapo" Grapevine-Colleyville school district will have no influence on what classes she feels her daughter should take or not take.

They should be allowed to learn the language of their choice. English should be required though to those that don't speak it as this is america. I think kids should be required to learn at least one maybe two languages though french would be a good one and maybe true spanish from spain, or latin. We all have to do things we don't want to though. Its part of life, however learning spanish is not always the best language to learn, if you are going to a spanish speaking country yeah learn it but if not let them learn french or german or something cool like that. If the illegals can't undestand us that isn't our problem they are in our country, if they don't like it and don't want to learn the language they should have to leave. Don't give me the oh they are here to help their family blah blah blah, come here the right way and then you can, pay taxes like everyone else. Don't stand on the side of the road and sell your services illegaly like a hooker. Ack but yeah spanish is a good language to learn but they should be given more options than just that.

...With all due respect I totally disagree with you. This is America we should ONLY learn English and Speak English. If businessmen from Japan, Germany, Norway, Mexico...etc on and on... THEY should Learn English or go Home without our Business. We are America everybody wants to come here, so Learn English or don't deal with us!

This is why other developed countries think that Americans are so stupid!.I am from Germany and love America but... we were required to learn at least two languages before we could graduate one of them being english and the other was your choice. There is a joke in other countries that goes...If you can speak 3 or more languages then you are european, if you speak 2 or more languages then you are of asian descent, if you can only speak 1 language then you were educated in America. Come on people this country was formed on immigration from other countries and once there was many languages here, when did you dummy down??

...Most American Universities also have the requirement of One additional language on their degree plan.

My daughter speaks Japanese. Because she WANTS to not because some school board decided to force her to take a class. A second language shouldn't be forced, it should be a desire. Personally, I won't go to Mexico again so the Spanish I do know is useless as far as I'm concerned. The illegals can learn to speak English.

Not the same thing. Does Germany have a large population of people moving in the country illegally that refuse to learn the language and the Germans being forced to learn that language to communicate with them? All of the legal immigrants that moved here learned English. Most schools here DO require a foreign language to be learned to graduate. The school I went to west of here only graduates 150 a year and there was still three languages we could choose. As far as the Europeans speaking three languages, that is bull. I know several people that are from Great Britain and the only language they know is English. My son's German teacher is from Germany and he only knows German and English.
