Mike Taylor is barred from GOP convention because of altered documents
Witnesses say Taylor's "This is always how we have done business," is an affront to the election process
A small group of enthusiastic voters turned up for their Republican precinct convention in March 2008. The group was not made up of a bunch of veteran politicians, but simply citizens seeking to get more involved with their party. The group of 8 gathered in a corner of the room and per the instructions in their precinct packet began the business of holding their small convention.
The group elected as its Chairman, George T. Barber along with a Secretary to record the decisions of the group. Mr. Barber told LNO today that this was his first time to be involved at this level and he had been advised to carefully record those attending the precinct convention because of problems in the past.
The group briskly went through its business and elected 6 delegates to the District/Senatorial Convention. The minutes were duly signed, the exhibits were put in a sealed envelope and personally delivered by Mr. Barber to the Tarrant County Republican Headquarters for proper processing.
As reflected in the minutes, Barber told LNO that at no time did Mike Taylor attend the meeting, nor was Taylor voted to be a delegate or nominated. However, when Barber reviewed the packet later at the Tarrant County GOP headquarters he was stunned to find the legal documents had been significantly altered.
GOP Precinct Convention Chairman Barber said he intentionally put an "X" through the last lines to confirm these were the only attendees.
When checking the records at the GOP Headquarters, Barber discovered the "Page 1 of 1" was changed. The last "1" had been blotted out with what appeared "whiteout" and the number changed to "2" with the list below added.
The names of the list was headed by Michael Taylor, the Place 6 candidate for re-election along with Susan his wife and Caitlin his daughter. Steven and Vicki Weinberg were also added although there is no evidence that the Weinbergs were aware of the change in advance.
Barber took exception to the incredulous notion that someone could simply go into the GOP headquarters, open a sealed envelope, whiteout the documents to alter the number of people attending AND then simply name delegates to the County/Senatorial District Convention, including Mike Taylor the individual that admitted to changing the document.
Barber attended the convention and filed a formal protest with the credentials committee:
Barber told LNO that the committee refused to seat any of the people listed headed by Mike Taylor. Another witness that asked not to be named said one member of the committee said she was "appalled" at the alteration of documents.
Taylor "admitted" he was the one that altered the document, however Barber paraphrased that Taylor said"...that is how things have been done." Taylor was also alleged to say that these were new people and really did not understand the process.
However, Taylor's "stuffing the delegate ballot box" was not "just the way things get done." He was not the only individual barred from being a delegate at the convention.
The Corpus Christi Caller Times reported another attempt to stuff the delegation with "unelected" delegates was admonished by the GOP Credentials Committee at the Senatorial convention held in Houston.
