They got their crime in under the wire on October 25, three days before Obama signed the federal hate crimes bill.

The federal hate crimes law only prevails in states that have no state hate crimes law; or a state hate crimes law lesser than the federal law.

They are being charged under Maryland's “committing a crime by assaulting the victim because of their sexual orientation” law.

Anyone ever notice that while the religious right fights against Hate Crime legislation, when incidents like this happen and the subject are charged with a Hate Crime, the same religious right never come to their defense?
Shouldn't those preachers claiming that their own freedom of speech is being violated because of hate crime laws go out and say these guys that were arrested had the right to call their victims these names?

Funny..they never seem to do that.

If we wanted your blood, fool, we'd be throwing rocks and bottles at your ilk.

You gays down there should think about doing just that. Cut the "gentle angry people" cr*p now that you have a president and a congress who are alledgedly on the side of gays, just as the Black Power people continued MLK's work after his death, albeit in a way he would not have liked. But their riots got the job done!

Hate crimes are different types of crimes.
They are terrorist acts, aimed not just at the individual victim, but the entire group he belongs to.

What religion are you? Let us know so we can come do graphiti on your church. What race are you? Let us know so we can attack you on that basis. then let us know what you think of hate crimes. so, tell me your religion and I can mock you and criticize your church. Come on, big talker.

Can they be committed by minorities against a majority?

Yes. In fact, 1/4th of race based hate crimes are committed against white people.
We've had hate crime laws for 40 years.
Here is the definition, and some stats.
"A hate crime, also known as a bias crime, is a criminal offense committed against a person, property, or society that is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin."

9-11 was a hate crime. If they catch Osama would you like him prosecuted under plain old vandalism or hate crimes? Please tell us.

No. There would have to be some indication that the church was burned down as a result of the perp's hate for that particular denomination.

A jilted lover or a simply unbalanced person or a person hoping to profit on fire insurance who burnt down a church would not be guilty of a hate crime, for example.

You are making the mistake the talibangelical bigots do when lying that any crime against a gay person is a hate crime.

Also, the kook-loon you were answering does not want existing hate crimes protections on the basis of religious affiliation to be repealed. That poster doesn't hate hate crimes laws, she (or he) hates g/l/b/t people. That's all this about, with her stooopit, ignorant, disingenuous questions.

Yes they can. If a gay person attacked a straight guy just because he was straight, that would be a hate crime.

If a black man killed a white guy just because he was white, that would be a hate crime.

If a person that hates light green worn with purple, attacked another just because he was wearing light green with purple, that would be a fashion statement.

The President is anti-gay. He has said so himself. He is Pro-USA and makes choices he believes are right for the USA and best represent what this country is built on. The fact he is willing to pass laws he is biased against which other presidents have completely dodged just proves how suited for the job he is.

You do not have to agree with homosexuality or gay rights or same sex marriage to realize and agree they are our rights as much as yours.

I don't think we should do anything bad to those people. Maybe just tie 'em up to a fence for three four, seven nights or so without food or water and leave 'em exposed to the four winds and the wild varmints. If they survive, they get to live. If not, oh well.

Hey, as a lesbian, if I get hit on by some str8 guys, is it OK for me to knock 'em, in the head with a rock and take their money and s***? I mean, can't I claim str8 panic defense? It's a form of temporary insanity that overcomes lesbians when confronted with unwanted sexual advances from men and forces us to rob them and leave them to die.

You mean straight men dont? Of course not you never hear of the 40 year old guy dating a 18 year old girl. Or a guy being arrested for having sex with an underage girl.
Oh and there have never been a female teacher arrested for seducing a young boy.
Nope all of these acts are strictly related to the LGBT Community right? Oh wait its different because those examples above are of straight people and your ok with straight people but since you hate gay people its wrong for us and we have to be the scary creature hiding in the closet.
I watched "To Catch a Predator" last night and they arrested about 30 HETERO men who were trying to "date" 12 or 13 year olds. But, hey, they were straight, so no problem with these fine Krizztian folk. Not really, but they don't shed a tear for the girls seduced this way. HY-PO-CRITES!
