People, what's the REAL story on this alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound?

There has GOT to be more to it than that?

What? Who? Where? Was he hiding his dirty deeds?

He's allegedly Native American and the funeral is being held in / at a Catholic church?

That alone causes me to go "Hmm? I say hmm?"

Shouldn't he be having a N.A. funeral service / ceremony?

Wow, instead of showing sympathy toward his family and friends you would rather try and stir up trouble. Believe it or not, police officers are people too. This tragic incident does not necessarily have to be work related. The OTH stated that he recently lost a nephew in a drowning accident. Perhaps that grief was too much to handle.

As for the funeral services, obviously this will be a big event and although the press release stated a catholic church in Olean, I'm assuming it would be St. Mary's given it's size. Too bad you didn't put more thought before you typed. While I don't know the sheriff's religious beliefs, St Mary's is probably the ony church of it's size in the area that will be able to accomodate the number of people that will show up. There will be a strong police presence, not only from Catt County and municipalities, but there will be representatives from across the state and also those from the Seneca Nation.

Regardless, who are you to question the funeral service logistics for somebody?

May Sheriff John rest in peace and my condolences go out to his family and friends during this tough time.

Suicide is a CRIME!!! Just because he was a cop doesn't mean he should get off scott free! He should at least get 10 years in prison before he's given a funeral.

I mean no disrespect to the family, but is it possible that something else could have happened? Lets face it,a lot of unsolved deaths have occured in the Olean area and the investigators always seem to wrap up their investigation within a few days, I think they don't want to take the time to actually do their job and I believe some of them don't know how to do their job, but if anyone believes that something else could have happened to this officer, please voice your thoughts, families need closure and need to know why and how. I know, my Father died a suspicous death in Olean, and we have no answers or help from the investigators, they just brushed us off and wont look into it because of my dads age. What are these investigators so afraid of? and what is going on in Olean, just read all the stories on this on the topix page, something is wrong. I pray for the family of this officer that they find the peace, and comfort and closure during this difficult time.

Sheriff Dennis John was probably the most respected elected official in WNY, and also the most respected law enforcement official.
My first thought when I heard that the funeral would be at St. Mary's is that it is the largest church in Cattaraugus County, with hunderds (if not thousands) of mourners expected...
Yes, this devastating tragedy is the latest mystery...we may never know who or what killed Sheriff Dennis John...may he rest in peace...

blackberry,

quit trying to make something out of nothing. I read all of the reports on the topix page and guess what, most of them were outside the city of Olean. Therefore, the city investigators have no jurisdiction and wouldn't be working on the case.

As for the passing of Sheriff John, I would imagine that everything points to a suicide. I know it's a tough concept but use your brain just once. Do you think his fellow officers would quickly dismiss his death if there was anything unusual or suspicion of foul play? It has been reported that the Sheriff sent a text message just before he shot himself. Do you not think they will perform a toxicology test and also check for GSR on his hands and body? Why would a killer risk being caught and send the text himself? If somebody else was involved (which there isn't) it would be much smarter to leave the Sheriff to be found whenever somebody passed by, rather than alert everyone where to find him. Officers raced to the scene once they got the text. If you had just killed the guy would you want to be in the area and draw police presence to you that quickly?

The bad thing about message boards is that anybody can post to them, including idiots like blackberry.

I am sorry if I offended you, but my father was killed in Olean and the police will not even bother to investigate his cause of death, and other deaths were in Olean one on the same street as my father, so sorry, I do not put my confidence in these investigators.

Rick, did I say anything wrong?

Blackberry, provide details then. How many YEARS apart were the alleged murders on the same street?

I thought it was a sin to commit suicide in the catholic religion

hmmmm,

The services were held at a catholic church because it is the largest church in the area that accommodate the large crowd. However, it wasn't a Catholic mass.

Furthermore, are you asserting that Catholics don't sin?

hmmm,

Two things here. First, while the mass was held at St. Mary's, it was not a Catholic service. They chose that church because as I stated before, it is the largest in the area which would be needed considering the amount of people expected.

Secondly, yes, it is a sin for Catholic's to commit suicide. Just as it is a sin for me to make fun of the ignorant. Point being, just because somebody sins doesn't mean they can't have a Catholic funeral, which is a moot point in this instance because the service wasn't Catholic.

The deaths were months apart last June and last October, both on Chipmonk Road in Olean, a girl found in a barn and my dad.

Here are a few cases that are unsolved murders in your neck of the woods Johnstown PA. Perhaps you should focus on your own area before you go blasting LE in NY.

As a matter of fact, one person (behind Walmart) was a natural death....his family was from Syracuse and was used to wander from home and just died naturally. A few others died because of stupidness on their part (that's what you get when you mess with fireworks and not just sparklers....I mean fireworks). And the headless guy was from Canada....where do you get off complaining about LE here in western NY.

I can complain, I am Ben Shields daughter, and the investigators have closed the case on his suspicious death because of his age. If he was younger they said they would look into it more, but they just do not want to spend the time or money because my dad was 77

just because your internet service providers office or IP address is in one place... as you clearly know this.... doesn't mean that is where you live. Keep up the good work.
