Thank you for a thoughtful article. I would like to answer a triflng question raised by Prof. Greider. Yes, Prof. Szostak was inundated with beautiful arrangements of flowers and at least one flowering plant.

I also want to congratulate Prof. Greider for setting an example for both men and women in integrating family life and work ambitions and productivity. The fact is, if men do not see themselves as integral parts of the home life women will have difficulty balancing work and family. Men also need to know they can leave to attend the play, take their child to the doctor and otherwise help to manage family life, or women will be left struggling and only the truly extraordinary, life Prof. Greider, will be able to manage it. As wonderful as it is to have extraordinary researchers like Professors Greider, Blackburn and Szostak, Nobel Laureates are the exception, even among those doing eye opening and important research. The playing field needs to be leveled, thus the examples these researchers set on the balance of work and family is vital to all their students and younger colleagues.

Professor Greider strikes me as an extraordinary woman as well as scientist and I congratulate her on her many successes as well as this well deserved accolade, the Nobel Prize.

At the moment telomerase is activated, cancer cells switch to anaerobic glycolysis, the only energy producing method that can support the programmed growth rate of a cancer cell, or of a fetus. Now lets fund these labs to find compounds that will kill the cancer by changing which genes are expressed, selectively in the cancer cells. Whatever the path of the research to come, we have to finance it!! Give them a couple billion of the bailout money we are currently giving to the wall street thieves!! Then get the hell out of their way.
