You all have so much more to be seriously concerned about than burglaries. Haven't you noticed the number of young and old dying from cancers? Look at the number of autoimmune disorders such as lupus and MS. Young women dying from aggressive cancers. Nobody seems to care, both races are affected by this. The refinery is killing people, look at your own families and friends, I bet you all know someone with one of the above mentioned health problems . Instead of talking racism and burglaries you all need to ban together and hold that refinery accountable for poisoning your town !

I understand! Have you ever seen the movie Erin Brokovich? She really did expose tat company in Texas. The law firm she works for is in Texas. I bet there's not a family in Coffeyville that doesn't have a family member suffering from an autoimmune disorder or cancer. Google Erin Brokovich!

Do you live here? If you do I doubt you are managing much more than garbage collection my friend. Im sure they release only good polution out there. We do have a high rate of disease here. And illness and the fact that there are old people living here that arent sick, what does that even mean? Our comunity would probobly have a townwide heart attack if we knew just 1/2 of what goes on out there.

When you have paint peeling off of vehicles after something was released over there.(This was years ago) My parent lived about 5 or6 blocks from there, we found something all over the vehicles, after it was cleaned off the paint started peeling. No telling what we all breathe in every day. Coffeyville does not have much to offer, if the refinery was shut down, how many people would lose their job? And where would they find another job? Health is important but eating and paying your bills are too. I know that is what companies like this count on. Isn't this refinery like the 3rd largest in this country?

Yes I'm sure it is one of the largest. I grew up there and I Iove my hometown. They need to be held accountable for the omissions they release. I just feel bad for the families who's lost loved ones, the children with respiratory issues, having to deal with the sickening odors they release. They need to called out on the poor way they've handled things. Just think, if the stuff eats away paint on your car and our house and eating Otto the metal of air conditioners what's it doing to your lungs????

What you're smelling is sulfur compounds, to include sulfuric acid. Even 'sweet crude' contains sulfur that must be refined out before use as fuel and 'dispersed' from the flame stacks. Anything with a petroleum base will naturally be attacked by these compounds. Is there a danger breathing it? Could be beneficial to smokers (breaking up tar stains in the lungs), but ingesting it is another matter altogether.

the refinery isnt the only thing polluting the air in Coffeyville... Did all of you forget we also have two foundries that release toxins into the air everytime they fire up and pour their metals?

The cases of cancer are directly influenced by the number of people that smoke in this area. Let us not forget the rampant drug abuse problems in the area, the number of people exposed to meth manufacturing, the lack of testing for traces of meth manufacturing in homes that are sold / rented exposes people that may not be using or manufacturing. Former zinc smelter, foundries, etc., turn a blind eye to the illegal burning of tires, shingles, and other regulated materials by some of our rural citizens and small businesses.

Power plants, refineries, hazardous processing plants are regulated by the government and pay fines for emissions over the limit.

Fix some of those problems and see what happens to the general health of the area. But go ahead and run the largest tax payer out of the county and see what happens to our personal property taxes, especially since we have to pay for not one but two community colleges. Let's blame everyone except ourselves for everything. I think I will now go sue daylight donuts for making me fat!

Meth use can cause cancer and other serious health problems as well as smoking, bad diet and genetics. The majority of what goes in the air is steam from the two plants and all emissions are well below e.p.a. standards the smell is bad but harmless. Maybe you should be looking in to the preservatives in processed and fast foods, chemicals in our fruits and veggies, arsenic in our rice, hormones in our meats and cell phone usage before you try to shut down or blame the biggest money making business in our area. Maybe you should do some more investigating on your idea first. Oh, by the way, are you just blaming the refinery or the nitrogen plant or both??
