The culprit is America's obsession with religion.
Once you accept an idea without any evidential or rational justification, but merely because some self-appointed authority says so, then anything goes. Follow that up with threats of awful consequences if you dare to question the idea and you have a "faithful" subject to delusional certainties and contempt for all who do dare.
It's because sufficient numbers in your society have never made it past the 16th century that irrational, insane ideas can continue into areas of government that then threaten to infect society at large through politics.
There is a serious threat illustrated here - a threat that could become very real if the GOP win this next election.
