I just phoned Potlach to inquire about the fees. My one week trip to hunt on Potlach land would cost me $125, my hunting partner $75, and our sons who come for 2 night $75 each.($350.00). I suggested a one time "camp" fee of $100 that would be good for only 2 weeks not annualy. I was told they talked about that, but decided not to go that direction.

Now that the Recreation fees are going to be a priorty I wonder if the County should continue the "Timber Exemption" or if now all their land should be taxed as recreation revenue property.

The interesting part of this is that between Avery and St.Maries its known as the checkerboard concerning land ownership. You really have to know the lay of the places to know whose land your on.
Besides the potlatch land around the St Joe is mostly railroad script land. No more railroad so why does potlatch have the land? I would really like to know what the locals think?

My wife and I are both disabled and enjoy taking the grand children on outings in the summer. Now wqe can not afford to do it as the cost is much to high for us. We are willing to pay a flat rate for the annuan camping spot but not all the extra costs. thank you Jim

I think we can expect this policy to fail; Potlatch has enjoyed numerous taxation benefits as if they were a "ward" of the state. Now that they have gone greedy, they can expect the public to begin charging Potlatch for access across THEIR lands... this is already happening, so I'm told.

In case you've not already been made aware, Potlatch is also considering what they've termed "exclusive use" leases (by any name a hunting lease) to be sold.

Now, not only can you be charged for crossing their land, some irate guy can come out and tell you to get the **** off HIS land for which he has "exlclusive use" rights. Better get a GPS, take a course in orientation and be prepared to get harassed!

Potlatch should let the people who want to ride on their land that their not using. If we want to ride their then they should monitor who goes up there and who rides. The people that tear up the forest and dont stay on the trails should be filmed and published.

I live in the Moscow Pullman area and have been tracking what Potlatch has been up to. Honestly their level of greed is amazing. Not only are they charging user fees but they also plan to sell off 120,000 acres for real estate development since they make the claim the land is "marginal" (worth more to develop) in terms of timber production. What this really is is just b.s. They don't care if they destroy the local timber market and price out all of the local people since the land sales are geared towards well do retirees and second home owners. Also, they were given the option some time ago of putting all their land in a land trust so that it could be logged in perpetuity with ever be developed... However they declined. Frankly I hope they all rot in hell. This is the type of bad business that has ruined entire regions. It does not need to be this way but they are just that greedy.....

I'm with Mmm on this. Potlatch had better get some signs up on their property lines or there will trouble they may not expect.

I am a local land owner with land bordering potlatch. What really irks me is I can not sell potlatch logs off my property because I am not a certified "green" logger. However they have commenced a rape and pilliage aproach to their land leaving just enough trees per acre to meet minimum standards under "Idaho forest practices act" so they do not have to replant. There plan is to sell the land after extensive logging.

I guess it looks good to those who own their stock shares......$$$$

the best way to stop this trend is to change there tax status from tree farm to recreational this will take away the profit of the fee they will charge PS ask the tax commissioner to change their tax status!!!!

I am waiting for the Dept of Interior to capture all of Potlatch's assets anyday now. The agreement when Potlatch aquired the hundreds of thousands of acre's at <$.50 cents an acre,...
was to ...

"maintain the land in the natural pristine condition as it was given, and if Potlatch couldn't handle that, it was to go back to the Government". Not to sell it off as Private Property. That is why we the public have had the privledge of useing the Potlatch lands evenly like and with the state and federal forested lands. I really think that there are crooks inside our government. Namely, Dirk Kempthorn for 1. and the Potlatch's new CEO who was previously fired from Plum Creek Logging in Oregon. If you were to take a looksee at the sloppyness of logging these days, its' worse than 30 years ago.

I have no desire to go to Potlatch lands. Especially with the Diamond Dogs runnin loose anyway. They, DD WOLF's, have nearly decimated most of the Sheep mountain, Pot Mountain, Bingo Saddle, Whiskey Butte ELK herds anyway.
*still looking forward for the wolf tags to be on sale for the last 4 years. Idaho F&G can't manage wild game anyway. Nor can they manage the Indians, Poachers, and the number of hunters that are out to hunt 2000 head of elk per unit when only 200 exist.

Another thing, Potlatch's CEO has already expired the tree farms starting with the green house at Lewiston.

Sorry to say it folks, but, Huntings is all but about gone. It really is too sad when we have these corperate types with dollar signs in their eyes, and no love for the creation of things to attempt to put back what was taken. The Earth don't have long to go before She Pukes up Vulcan matter into the skys anyway. Money Money Money .

I am to believe that there is nothing sacred any longer. May the wrath of the :
Fraternal Order of the Red Beetle Society and
the Sisters' of the Light
decend upon the likes of the wigs at Potlatch and the government for letting this happen.
If I were them, I would be ashamed to call myself a forester.

Potlatch besides being greedy is continuously blowing large amounts of carcinogenic smog into the air here in the L.C. Valley, not to mention the poison leaching through the ground water into the Clearwater that sooner or later will render it as the largest sewage system this side of the
Mississippi. Is there no end to the crass stupidity of corporate greed, not to mention the mindless murder of all its paper mill employees who come to the hospital with severe COPD from working in the mill and no history of smoking. Hmmm? And we are being charged to ride or otherwise enter into the forest? Shame on them

So with all of the bad info about what Potlatch is doing, I didn't see any info about who to contact and complain to in order to change things. Complaining is the freedom of speech but action is power.
