Beware of Kirby Vacuum Sales Tactics!

Last week, my friend and day-care provider had a horrible experience with a Kirby vacuum sales man who came to her door in a Post Falls neighborhood. The tactics used by these "sales" people were a appalling! First a female knocked on her door and gave her a line about a free carpet shampoo. With 6 little kidos in her in-home daycare pushing at the door to see who it was, the sales woman quickly offered bubbles for the kids and gained access to my friends home. There was a quick bait and switch with a male salesperson out of western WA who brought in the Kirby unit and proceeded with a high-pressure sales demo of the vacuum. She told him repeatedly she did not want to buy and would not with out her husband home (he was at work), but being the nice, sweet, easy-going person she is, she was not forceful enough to get him to leave. After I had picked up my kids and left she texted me that she "couldn't get rid of him." I returned and helped her kick him out of her home, but not before he thoroughly berated us both and called his "boss" explaining the situation in not so nice terms. She told me later that he had tried to get her to purchase without her husband's consent because it was for health purposes and she should look at it as a business expense for her daycare. Despicable! Do not let Kirby in!

Last week my friend was moving and a fellow offered to help her, next thing we knew there were two other fellows that joined in, then we got the Kirby switch! They asked her if they could do a demo, and then I wanted to know who these fellows were so I asked for the same demo and they sent a text the next day. My husband had me ask for their last names and their credentials and they never answered back. This is a scam, do not let these fellows any where near your homes.

These people are still going door to door in Michigan. They are very pushy and take you off-guard. We feel they may have been casing our home. Just don't open the door and tell them you are NOT interested and close the door. I called the police after they left, which I had to ask them more than once. I don't know if the police can do anything, but this won't happen again. They will not be allowed in my home. We are also alerting our neighbors to warm then and to keep an eye on each others homes.

While no one can dispute the product is good, the way the product is sold is unacceptable. It is unsafe to allow strangers into your home and from the employee perspective, it is unsafe for them to be trying to attempt access into a stranger's home.

If I want a Kirby, I will buy one off ebay or Craigslist.

To the OP: it is especially unsafe for a daycare operator to let a stranger into her home that is filled with small children. What was she thinking? How was she planning to watch the demonstration and watch the children? My child would not stay at that daycare, ever, I can tell you that!

I went thru the demo about 6 months ago and the gentleman was polite and did nothing to make me feel pressured at all. He was alone so I didn't feel tag teamed. There was no way I was going to pay $1379 though. Ended up getting one for $600. It is amazing how negotiable they are. Some even pay $3300 plus!

Last evening around 7:30, a pair of Kirby pitchmen surfaced in my suburban Michigan neighborhood. While working in my office, I was alarmed by a loud banging on my front door, followed by shouting. When my heartbeat slowed, I peeked out the front window into the dark and saw a van driving slowly past the streetlight. I called a male neighbor, who arrived in a few minutes. Together, we watched the car cruising the neighborhood, stopping twice at a nearby house. I called that neighbor and she had just experienced the same scenario. I then called the police, who came to the neighborhood and found the van. Kirby salesmen, the officer told me, and they get frequent complaints about Kirby's aggressive approach to homes. My other female neighbor also had the idea these two guys were casing our medium-to-upscale neighborhood, which is fairly isolated.

I had a Kirby salesman come by right before Christmas. Although I am home during the day (on bed rest in my last trimester of pregnancy), I don't want to be disturbed and have a No Soliciting sign posted. Most door to door people that come through my neighborhood skip my house, but this guy chose to ignore the sign and pound on my door anyway. He didn't identify himself as selling vacuums, instead giving me a spiel about carpet and grout cleaning. I said I wasn't interested and started to shut the door when he pushed it open and walked inside to inspect my carpets and bathroom. He was back out on the street within minutes as I picked up my phone to call the police immediately. I also contacted the BBB. I maintain that No means No and if you conduct sales like a rapist you should be treated like a criminal.
