Jess, Nolan, Vanessa, Monty, and Kyle have all had their go at it and they never actually helped anything. Why did Monty just up and quit the board? I thought he did a great job. What I hear about Jess bothers me. I agree with the one that said he couldnt speak in public. Whenever the board meetings are on the tv I watch them and I have only seen Jess at the debate and the forum and he did not impress me at all but I have seen the Mullins kid up there a lot and I really like him and what he says. One thing is for sure, hes got alot of passion. I mean you know I think it is wonderful that we have the youth wanting to come out and run. We always are on them about going out and doing something, well lets give the kid a chance and see what happens. He cant do any worse than any of the rest of them. And the experience thing really doesnt matter in my opinion although he graduated fairly soon so he probably does know more about what the schools need than dr. perry and his loony barn, opps I mean central office.

I think you need to reconsider your facts. Mr. Powers has not had a go at it. He ran for the School Board seat and only lost by 112 votes. Mr. Kilgore has gone on record stating that the Coeburn community does not want a high school. He also came up with the 3 in 1 site concept to be built in Norton. He now wants to build a new school in Wise for Coeburn and Wise. Vanessa resigned. Monty's and Kyle's term expired. I think the best thing for Coeburn is to elect Mr. Powers to Vanessa's seat and have Mr. Mullins run against Mr. Kilgore.

I heard there was a petition against the new school consolidation plan. Does anyone know who is circulating the petition because I want to sign it? Might be our last chance to Save Our School (SOS).

The school cannot be salvaged. I for one have spent more time than a normal student in that school. The summers are too hot and the furnace is too hot in the winter. I think everyone has their priorities messed up. I understand hometown loyalty, but this goes beyond that. The students deserve better conditions, so stop crying about the good ole days. What you should be doing is helping the consolidation process move forward. This is going to happen like it or not!!! So get with the program!

be real needs to get real. The school board has a new plan to build 2 new schools and renovate the rest. The most recent plan was the 6 in 3 which was to Close 3 and renovate 3. Before that it was the 3 in 1. Getting real would be to renovate all 6 schools.

I signed the petition at the Guest River Rally, it was well worded and required immediate action to renovate all 6 high schools. This is the only way Coeburn will be able to keep the school. As for me, I take my 4 kids to school at Coeburn and my mother picks them up after school. I work in Lebanon, so a school in Wise or Norton would not work for me. Maybe I should go ahead and take them to Castlewood, at least they have air conditioning. Since I work with 6 ladies from Wise County, we are all thinking about moving our kids to a better school system.

You are correct, Harold Ringley held both positions. Jess is an excellent speaker. During the debate he focused on consoidation because obviously that was and is the issue. Nolan Kilgore is old school with older ideas. Yes years ago consolidation was recommended, but latest research has shown this to have failed. JESS would do the right thing because of the person he is. Plus Im sure he would not let his personal relationship with Dr. Perry influence his vote. Obviously Vanessa was swayed in some form to have stated she wouldn't give Appalachia a gym because students may leave for Norton. How uncaring toward a community school!
No Harold didn't hold both seats after the law changed he had to give one up and he gave up school board.

I for one, who also went to a combined school, am still totally against it. Although there are some advantages to combining high schools, the worse thing is the hostility it brings into it between the students. Now 15 years down the road, this may not be an issue. It will be the only school remembered and expected to be attended; but for now, all students want their school. When they enter into the combined school, each high school will still have their cliques and each one thinks they are more deserving of something than the other clique. It really caused some hot button issues and heated arguments and fights. I still like the feel of a community school and not lumping all of the students of each community together. They will get the opportunity to expand just as much in college as they would in a combined school. I am not trying to dismiss anyone's opinion of wanting the schools, but this is just my personal experience with the issue.

I just read in the minutes of the online Wise County School Board minutes that the board members representing Coeburn High School says that "Coeburn residents do not want a High School." The School has been there over 100 years, is this statement true? Will the Blue Knights die? There are only a few that I know that support the consolidation in Coeburn. Most do not want to loose the school. It is the only thing to do on a Friday night in Coeburn. I think the residents of Coeburn should protest this inaccuracy statement from the Board members. Once a Blue Knight always a Blue Knight, right?
Those board members are wrong. We want Coeburn High School back, name and all. It's a shame that the name was changed.

Sometimes I get so damm mad over the changes at Coeburn High School, name and all. Those board members are very much wrong. We not only want our High School; we want the name back too. To most citizens its still Coeburn High School. And maybe, just maybe, the name will shine again---soon.

I will never say eastside. That's just freaking stupid. I've got kids in the lower schools, if its eastside when they reach high, they will move to Norton.

And leave all of their friends just because you don't like the name of a school? Makes so much sense.
