rumor has it not really a surfer....
a real surfer would not have done that.
Surfing is about peace, balance and harmony in your life. If he would have been a novice even at that age he would have done that at home. He would not have been able to make it to the water where he loved it! We will see....

He was a surfer!
He lovd the ocean more than life its self... That is why he died in the water. You really shouldn't talk like that if you didnt know Josh. We must never judge people who do such thing.

obviously he didn't like himself or the ocean enough to over come the urge to kill himself.

so the real issue is why did he do it?

Yes, it was a suicide and it runs in our family a lot. I do believe it is the cowardly way out, but Josh had many private issues that he tried to keep to himself. He was in extreme and constant pain from back injuries from a hit-and-run driver that prevented him from ever surfing well again. It was his true love to be in the water on the waves. He also was financially ruined by his spinal treatments and surgeries. All his requests for government assistance were denied by the agencies. He actually saw no other way out. I loved him dearly and he was the light of our family's life. He touched a lot of people during his short life with his never-ending wit and friendliness. He would have given you the shirt off his back if you needed it, even if it was the only one he had left. Nobody can guess the private hell he had made for himself and I only wish he would have asked for help. I am shocked at the public display he decided on for the end because that was WAY out of character for him!
I am angry he left us intentionally, but I hope people stop being cruel with their words and pray that God had mercy on his soul. He changed our lives forever when he was born and when he died.

I was there that day, waiting tables in Marlin's just like any other normal work day at the Cocoa Beach Pier. I saw it all. It was right in front of my section. There were children saying, "Daddy, I'm scared!" I just can't believe that you could traumatize so many people like that! I mean don't do it at all, but at least don't do it where you will scar sooo many people for the rest of their lives!

I broke my neck, my back, and my hip in 2 pieces in '02. The doctors said I would never walk again. Now I run races and win trophies. Although I am in pain, I rise to the top for the people that I love and my friend Dave who pulled Josh out of the ocean that day without much help from the many beach people present that day also broke his neck. You rise to the top! That's what you do!

I am so sorry that a young man saw no alternative but to end his life. My son fell from a 3 story roof when he was 24..he has suffered every day of his life since that trajic accident. Pain can cause anyone to lose hope. The only reason my son is still going is due to his faith that someday Matt 6:9,10 will be fulfilled. Rev 21:3,4 and Ps.27:10.11...no resident will say that they are sick...in God's Kingdom. This young man may be resurected to God's righteous new government that we all pray for when we pray the Lord's prayer...Then he to will have a chance to serve God the way we were supposto from the beginning.
The next time Jehovah's Witnesses come to your door take their literature..even if you don't want to talk with them. Use your own Bible as a reference. YOu may be suprised, and encouraged to know that soon God will rectify the trajedies such as this one for all of mankind.

Surfer queen, who are you to judge? Perhaps he didn't want to leave a mess for his family. Rumor has it that suicide really hurts those who are left!!!!!!!! Please keep your "balanced" thoughts to yourself.

John P,
You say "theres no such thing as guts to end your own life, its a cowards way out?"

REALLY????
Can you put yourself in his shoes? Im not trying to justify his decision, nobody wants to hear that a loved one has killed themself, and obviously it could be argued that a suicide victim doesnt think of the greiving family and friends he leaves behind, but to say that he wasnt couragous to paddle out into the ocean and blow his face off is just stupid. if you ask me, the lad had a huge pair of balls. if more people realized that life on this overpopulated earth should be saved for those who want it, it would be a better place.

Surfer queen, your rose-colored glasses are blinding you; surfers are no different than anyone else. People in pain --whether they're surfers, waitresses, truck-drivers, full-time moms, or or whatever -- do irrational things when they are in insurmountable pain. Pain, you see, doesn't allow them to think; it only allows them to feel.
And Summer, did you know doctors say a woman's tolerance for pain substantially exceeds a man's tolerance for pain? So although you were able to manage your pain, it doesn't mean everyone else shares your tolerance for pain.
My condolences to the family; know he's in a better place.
