Highway expansion in Forestport means goodbye to trees for resi...

Full story: WKTV - News - Local

WHITE LAKE, N.Y. - The New York Department of Transportation says they need to improve road conditions on Route 28, but the people in Forestport say they don't want a new and improved highway running through town if it means clear cutting trees and moving utility poles.

Then don't give them electricity. Go around their town and leave them in the dark. They aren't taking down that many trees.

Just where is this going to take place? Do you mean the trees that will have to be taken down in woodgate on the corner where the new landscaping business is? Or do you mean above White Lake on Rte28 between White Lake and Otter Lake?? Is this action needed because of the work done already at the power substation on Rte 28? I can't find info on this, I must have missed this in the news.
Explain

National Grid plans to destroy thousands of trees between Woodgate (White Lake) & Otter Lake during DOT's road project on Rte. 28 because they want a 37.5 foot clearance around new poles and lines. Residents are fighting for underground lines, which National Grid is refusing to do. I'll be losing 14 trees on my property. See www.savewhitelaketrees.org for more information.

That's only the start. Rt. 28 thru the Adirondacks is planned for reconstruction in the years to come. Whatever is done in the White Lake area in 2010 will be done throughout the Adirondacks. If National Grid gets APA approval for trees to be destroyed in the White Lake area for a 37.5 foot clearance around poles and lines, trees will be destroyed all along Rt. 28 in the coming years.

There has been a great deal of harvesting of trees on private land all along the corridor over a short period of time, not only by Nat'l Grid, but by logging companies. Is anyone aware of how much timber has been harvested in our community? The 50's found our forests nearly depleted, and now that is has re-growth it could be ravaged again in many ways, including the need for utilities.
If the utility company takes the volume of trees they say they will be taking, add that to the amount of cutting that has been going on out of our vision, in our town, and see what you come up with.
There must be another way to save the amount of trees that are inherent to our community and yet allow safer roads, in addition to having provision for "progress" that will be required by providing amenities to the areas that prove their need for more power.
This action should not desecrate our Forest.

National Grid has the technology to place the lines underground, but they won't do it because it will cost $2 million from the White Lake area to Otter Lake. They had a profit of over $600 million last year. Please help in the fight to save the trees. Complete the petition letter on www.savewhitelaketrees.com before the APA approves National Grid's plan to destroy the trees.

There is more forested land in New York state now than there was in 1900. Just look arround Forestport and see the places that used to be clearings or farms that have been let go back to trees.

Is there censorship on these forums? I just did a post explaining that National Grid, US has received #200 million dollars of stimulus money for projects in 3 states, of which NY is one.
That money will be used no doubt, to cut our trees and ravage our corridor. People have requested NatlGrid, which is now National Grid of Great Britton, to put the wires underground in our Rte 28 corridor. They replied it would be too costly to them. They have free stimulus money,we should have our share of it to keep our trees and they can keep their share of OUR money and bury the cables.
Now lets see if this gets posted this time!!

Now the APA should realize that the cost factor has been removed. It is our tax dollars going to another country, to make money, so they can in turn grow at the expense of our US Stimulus funds, and then charge us more for their services. Is your head spinning yet?
There are adequate monies to bury that cable in our area and still have surplus for their profits. Call our legislators, who by the way once were suburbanites, and ask that they join in to stop this desecration of our communities of White Lake and Otter Lake.
This should go national..........

Have any of you idiots looked in the woods latelely we have anything but a lack of trees in the adirondacks. What happens when one of your family members hits a bump on one of those sharp corners and gets killed slamming into a tree. Most of those trees that you people had nothing better to do than hang caution tape on that looks terrible by the way are all sapplings anyway. Maybe you people should of thought about that when you decided to buy homes 100 feet off a highway. The road needs to be improved and half those trees marked won't be cut anyway. Why sacrifice a life for a stupid tree. Find something else to complain about tree huggers.

Maybe the idiots that drive 85 mph in a 45 mph zone should slow down, then they wouldn't hit any trees. All the accidents that occurred at "the curve" in Woodgate were due to excessive speed and/or drunk driving. The curve is safe if you drive the speed posted.

If this road project that National Grid is proposing, does not go through, what would be the consequences for the newly developed business on the famous "Curve" at White Lake???

Matteson's is an established business in a new state funded building at the "curve". The state also paid for their new house behind the business. The business will continue to grow with rental cabins being built now.

I am happy to hear Matteson's will not be harmed by the work that will be done in that area. I wish them well.
