OK. Let me just say, A:) I have a Phd. in wildlife biology. B.) I spend more time outdoors in a year than most people spend in a lifetime. C.) The "animal" that people reported seeing behind Burger King was a Bobcat. D.) SIU Doctoral students have been studying Bobcat populations in the Anna Quarry location for a number of years (trapping, tagging, etc.) E.) THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A DOCUMENTED CASE OF A BLACK MOUNTAIN LION EVER!!!!!!!!!
Now, I can accept the possibility of Mountain Lions being in our area. There are numerous reports of young males migrating out of the Dakotas. Many have been seen (and confirmed) in Missouri. Illinois has had 4 (I believe) confirmed sightings in recent years with one being killed in Chicago by police and one being killed by a train in the Chester area.......But again, NO BLACK CATS.
I am highly skeptical of a black leopard or jaguar living in our area..... Sightings happen ALL of the time! The same is true for Bigfoot. It doesn't make it real. Peoples' eyes can play tricks on them. The same is true for photo's......they require "scale" to confirm.
You remind me of one of my biology teachers from a few years back. He also had a PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper). He swore there were no such things as hog-nosed snakes or chicken hawks around here. One of the students brought both to class and he had a different opinion. There is nothing more irritating and obnoxious than an educated idiot.

OK Apache 1......This "educated idiot" is open to correction. I will agree that I am wrong. All you have to do is (similar to the hognosed snake and "chicken" hawk) is produce one black panther.(not a jaguar or a leopard) I anxiously await........and will agree to notify the media.

There was a (confirmed) wolf sighting in northern Illinois last year. There was also one that was killed by coyote hunters. I believe they indicated that the wolves were working thier way south through Wisconsin. There is a sizable population in the U.P. of Michigan.

I have never seen a black bear in ill but I believe it. Like 10-15 years ago a lady swears she seen a black bear in her yard on the out side of Gorville. They are also in mo cause my boyfriend has seen one right outside of advance and there have been many spotted in Zelma.
Black Bears???? Yes!!! They could possibly be here. There is a growing population in SE Missouri. They have been moving north from Arkansas. It is a matter of time (if it hasn't happened already) before one crosses the river..

I have a question for you though. How many people hunt this area in Lick Creek that you refer to??? How many trail cameras do you think are in use in the area these days??? No pictures of black panthers.

I'm not trying to be "obnoxious", just stating a fact of nature. Black Mountain Lion's don't exist.. Now, if a jaguar were to be seen........well let's just say it would be easy to tell the difference. An adult jaguar reaches a weight of 350 lbs...an adult Mountain Lion MAY reach 190 lbs..I agree that there is the possiblility of a ML in the area. I call BS on a Jaguar or "Blcak Panther".

There have been MANY "eye witness accounts" of bigfoot, some even in our area. The same is true for aliens from outer space.....Peoples eyes can do funny things.

Show me physical evidence.

Not a fan of Wikipedia but I will just throw this out there.
" Cougar coloring is plain (hence the Latin concolor) but can vary greatly between individuals and even between siblings. The coat is typically tawny, but ranges to silvery-grey or reddish, with lighter patches on the underbody, including the jaws, chin, and throat. Infants are spotted and born with blue eyes and rings on their tails;[36] juveniles are pale, and dark spots remain on their flanks.[34] Despite anecdotes to the contrary, all-black coloring (melanism) has never been documented in cougars.[45] The term "black panther" is used colloquially to refer to melanistic individuals of other species, particularly jaguars and leopards.[46]"

Google "Black Mountain Lion"

Here is some information from the Missouri Department of Conservation:

•“Black panthers” are not native to North America, but they do exist as melanistic (black color) phases of the leopard (Panthera pardus) found in Africa and Asia and the jaguar (Panthera onca) of Mexico and Central and South America. Throughout its range, no melanistic (black) mountain lion has ever been documented by science.

How easy do you think it is to produce a black panther or wildcat of any kind? I guess you can feel safe in your challenge. They are not seen often and one is usually unprepared when they are seen. So let it rest.

Let it rest???? You essentially called me out and made it personal. All I have said is that black mountain lions do not exist....You obviously have internet capabalities. Do some research. Prove me wrong.

I backed up what I have said by providing just a few easily found sources from a simple google search. Trust me, there is a TON of information out there. I would agree that there is the possibility that a mountain lion could be/or has frequented this area. HOWEVER, the black lion resides only in your dreams, which are "piled higher and deeper" it appears.

Winthrop or Guest or whomever you are, I have said nothing about a black lion. I have been speaking of a black wildcat on Wildcat Bluff.

I agree. Neither of us have said black lion. Winthrop/Guest, quit puttin words in our post that was never said. Panthers are in the area an have been for years that I know of. Like I said, we have heard them, seen one and our neighbors even seen one chasing their damn chickens in the yard! They aren't stupid, I have looked on google too and it even said in one research I read that it is possible for them to have migrated and if the area does have them then are are night creatures and that they stay out of well opened areas the best they can. And no they aren't being seen in dreams. The one I seen was about 6:45-7:00 am next to a pond that had trees on the back side. It came from the trees and was by the pond for a couple seconds then walked across a very lol title field and went into more woods.

If they (mt. lions)are "seen", observed, photographed, or you locate a "kill", track or any other physical evidence, I "know" of an IDNR field Biologist (who is piled higher and deeper) that would love to investigate.

The link can be found through the IDNR website.

This may be true, but others have, and its existance has been verified.

All Guest or Winthrop has said is there is a difference between what is a fact and what someone thinks is a fact. They two are not the same.

People report seeing things all the time but that doesn't make it real. Not saying they are lieing, just saying there is a BIG difference between what someone "thinks" they see and what is really there.

From what I read from his comments, he is interested in seperating fact from fiction. Pretty simple use of the scientific method.

OH!!!! and in Apache1 second post he calls him "dumbass". That's a proven way to be taken seriously.

Guest and Winthrop are in fact one and the same. Initially, I posted from my Ipad. Didn't check to see what name was listed. I guess if you put nothing there it lists you as "guest". At any rate, what does that have to do with the validity of my statements?

No idea who "Educated" is. But whatever. Go ahead slinging insults then claiming victim status.
