for decades, every generation of local kids have complained about nothing to do, nowhere to go, and everytime you give them a place to do something---and they screw it up anyhow.

Its just a shame that a few bad ones ruin it for everyone else. I'd love to see something like that for the bikers and boarders in Jim Thorpe, if you don't play the traditional football or baseball there is no where for these kids to go. You'd be amazed at what some of these kids can do with a bike or a board.
And parents instead of complaining go to the park and talk to the kids and explain to them how lucky they are to have this park.
My son is a biker and if he had a park to ride I'd be overjoyed, but if there were kids ruining it for him and his friends (who are respectful kids) I'd be at the park making sure they didn't ruin it for them.

Teenagers are idiots, every last one of 'em. I was an idiot when I was a teenager and so were you. Be thankful you were smart and/or lucky enough to survive those years. I feel sorry for 'em when I see 'em.

Give these kids a chance. When you get a group of teenagers together at a common meeting place there are bound to be a few that cause trouble, but as a whole I think this is a positive thing for the community. I think skateboarding has developed a negative connotation when in fact it can be a great hobbie for a kid. In my son's case it helped instill perserverence and self confidence. Once you work out the kinks in the design flaw of this park it should be fine. So many people just assume these kids are criminals because of how they dress and because they ride a skateboard or BMX bike. lets not judge and give them the benefit of the doubt. We were all kids once too.

Make the kids take responsiblity to not block the sidewalks but DON'T take away the skate park! The problem has always been that there is nothing for kids to do. Well, now there is something for them to do and people don't like it. Invite the kids that use the park to your council meetin to have their say as well. Skateboarders are not bad kids. Skateboarding is a sport and of the boarders are very good at it.

Bottom Line: Regardless of where any park is, someone will complain.

There are people who complain where there are soccer or ball fields because cars park on their streets during games or the lights shine in their windows.

When I grew up if there wasn't a park around we hung out on the streets and someone complained. Now if kids use the parks people complain.

Bikes blocking the sidewalks is a problem, but get the town to put in a bike rack, don't make them move the parks.

Just a thought....

"I'm old and grumpy. Back when I was a kid, blah, blah, blah. I don't want kids playing in the streets. I don't want them in the park. I don't wanna hear them. I don't wanna see them. Get off my lawn!"

When the cops chased us, we just went into the woods and drank. No need to have people complain about teens hanging out in town. Where do you think we all are on a Friday and Saturday night? We're all sitting by a nice bonfire drinking and hoping the cops won't show up. And they never do, that would require getting out of the car and actually walking in the dark.

As a parent I'd rather have my kid at a skatepark than sitting in the woods drinking. Can't believe the town would rather close it than try to resolve the issues. Maybe if you have the kids form a committee and report to borough meetings once a month and ask them for their input and to be responsible for cleaning it up they will respect it more. Or maybe I just live in a fantasy world.

If the skatepark wasnt there where would these kids be? huh? please tell me. every adult who complained and pushed this issue needs to be flown out to the middle of the ocean and pushed out the plane. i cant believe people are so rediculously stupid. When I was a teenager in Lansford in the 70's, we had Johnny's Bowling Alley and Baldini's as places to hang out, that was IT. Granted we spent plenty of time in the woods doing what teenagers do, but it would have been nice to HAVE a skate park. Kids will be kids, and they NEED a skate park. Leave the kids alone...they're alot smarter than you give them credit for. Besides, once they're educated, they'll run from the coal regions and only come back to retire like me. Oh, and for all you old farts complaining about the noise...go live in a vacuum or consider soylent green !!!

Maybe if these kid's parents would spend some time with them at home helping the study, instead of having them run the street, the PV's PSSA scores wouldn't be so low

I took my two boys to this park over the summer. There might have been +20 boys there at the time. Only one other parent sat on a bench. Ages were between 6 to 13. 10 being the average. They behaved well for being so many without adult sup. But there was this older boy (maybe 17) who was playfully being teased by a girl maybe a bit younger than him. He was yelling and cursing at her infront of everyone. It continued for a few minutes and I couldn't hold back but had to tell him to stop using those words with the kids there. He said he was sorry and it ended with that. Then, he was walking around with a cigarette. The older ones are going to wreck it for the younger ones. They always do. And they don't care. I hope this park stays. The kids really enjoyed it. The older ones need the park too. If they're gonna make it a hang out, atleast it's better than getting into trouble somewhere else. But how do we make them understand this is a privilage and their conduct could ruin it before they ruin it for everyone?

The brightest amongst Lansford must being saying UhDuh what did you expect the teens to act like angels with wings? All you had to do was look at the Ann Simard initiated heroin skate park in Tamaqua to see what you were in for. Every teen from Frackville to Hazleton spreads the word on the school buses that if you want drugs then go to the Tamaqua skate park. But beyond it being a drug haven just look at how the park is constantly trashed, litter, broken glass everywhere, the fence and water fountain destroyed. the elderly are afraid to go anywhere near the park as the teens abuse them but most amazing is the fact that they stand right out in the open doing illegal drugs and the cops well they just drive right on by. I'm actually glad Lansford built their park, maybe half the heroin addicts will now leave Tamaqua and hang out in Lansford since the council put out the welcome mat for them.

The skate park will breed nothing but trouble. Just another area for the the kids to hang out and sell/do drugs. The days of kids acting responsible are over in this valley. God forbid they act with respect to their elders who pass by. No matter how nice the parks/playgrounds are, reality must set in that these places will not change nor hide the disease that is growing in Lansford. Blame the parents for the way the some of the kids are today. They get the mentality from the parents that they don't have to work and the government will pay and they can sit around all day smoking, drinking, doing drugs, and it's all OK!
