Mandatory drug counceling and drug testing (blood tests/not urine) for all convicted criminals at their own expense for a specified period of time (twice weekly for a year) or else sent to the big house would help to cure this problem.

According to statistics, as opposed to the idle speculation of many posters here, Braidwood enjoys an exceptionally low crime rate. To view the crime statistics and compare them with surrounding communities as well as the US in general, copy and paste this url into your browser: city-data.com/crime/crime-Braidwood-Illinois....

For most of your lifetime, the US has been waging a War on Drugs. Trillions of dollars has been spent and the majority of posters here suggest that the drug problem is growing in your town. Obviously, this begs the question that if trillions have been spent fighting illegal drugs and the problem has not declined, why on earth would you continue to advocate throwing more money exclusively on law enforcement?

Combatting the affects of illegal drug use is a complex problem that requires a multifaceted approach. Yes, law enforcement is needed but so are other things like drug education, employment opportunities, youth programs and counseling. Also required is a new approach regarding laws that pertain to marijuana.

Western states have already arrived at this conclusion and have taken steps to legalize marijuana. Now, ask yourself this; “Why is it that heroin became so cheap and plentiful here around the same time that so many other states decriminalized marijuana?

The reason is because the majority of former illegal drug dealers in states that legalized pot have been put out of business. Illegal drug dealers don’t often care if they sell pot, meth or heroin. Illegal drug dealers also don’t check ID’s to make sure the buyer is over 18 years of age. So when a user shows up to buy weed because they feel like getting high, and the dealer has no weed - that dealer sells them something else. And often, that buyer will react the same way you might when the liquor store is out of your favorite brew. You try another brand they try another drug. This is why people who have devoted their lives to studying drug problems have come to the conclusion that marijuana, in and of itself, does not lead to harder drugs – it is marijuana laws that are the gateway to harder drugs.

So as access to pot in states with progressive laws have led to less use of hard drugs, the price and availability of those drugs has increased in states that still keep marijuana illegal. This is simply the marketplace responding to supply and demand. And you are seeing the effects of this in your little community.

If you really want to combat illegal drugs and the problems they create in your town, then quit advocating for the same thing that has been proven a failure since 1971 and the start of the War on Drugs. Think outside the box people!

This isn’t about letting people get away with something by legalizing marijuana, its about saving the lives of people who are lured into harder drugs by unscrupulous illegal dealers. Following an end to prohibition, alcohol related deaths decreased between 10 and 20 percent and alcohol use decreased by as much as 60 percent initially and 30 percent long term.

Legalize pot and hold legal pot growers and sellers accountable for educating the public on smoking and consuming pot responsibly like we do alcohol distributors. Then take the trillion dollars we will save in wasted law enforcement and create jobs and get this economy rolling again.

Could it be that the cops are the ones introducing it into our little humble society and "we the people" are all too blind to see. Coming from a so called "druggie" most because of my habitual use of marijuana, they are all not what they appear. I have seen things taken from my sisters car and the next week this police officers "friend" is seen with my grinder and hitter -box. I do believe when I was in high school here, Heroin, Cocaine and Methamphetamines were just as prevelant as any other lower class drug such as a controlled substance i.e. Xanax, Hydrocodone. Or marijuana. The cops control the dispensing of our drugs in our town, just as our Federal government controls how many pounds of marijuana come over the border each day. Don't be fooled, sheep
