Unless something has changed in recent years, Wilmington doesn't fire teachers. They give them the opportunity to resign for personal reasons so they can get another job elsewhere.

I don't know the exact situation, but if she didn't get the offer/suggestion to use the restroom that is customary befor departure than the parents have a case. Yes, the timing screams payday but once again- not knowing the situation, maybe they have been trying to get a conference/hearing w the school this whole time and have finally accepted that it will not happen w/out legal action. I do not believe we should have to provide busses w restrooms for field trips under 1 hr nor do I believe having a child pee in a cup on a moving bus are feasible solutions to this situation. So what is the answer? Who knows, I'm not sure but I do feel bad for all involved- mostly for the little girl that will be made fun of for this, no doubt all through her schooling in this district.

I go to this school and was on the bus when this happened the girl *whos name I will not disclose* is rather popular but when this happened she asked to go to the bathroom the teachers gave her a choice students did not see her doing it and she was not in anyway teased no one really cared until the law suit came up

I'm surprised the bus driver doesn't just hand her one of his empty beer bottles to piss into.

This whole situation seems to have been blown out of proportion. The students were told to use the restrooms before they left. If the student chose not to, thats her problem. And if she didn't have to go an hour or so before, too bad. Suck it up and hold it or go in your pants. I would think that would have been more humiliating than this experience. Btw....several students have said that she was laughing and joking about the incident. The parents are the ones with the problem, that in turn, "upset" their daughter.
I just am having a hard time with the whole lawsuit. Seems like the parents are money hungry. I can think of 101 other ways to get my childs college education paid for.

No one knows the whole story of what's happened over the last year so why doesn't everyone shut the pie hole and quit gossiping! It's utterly ridiculous that everyone sit behind a screen name and a computer and can talk crap!

Leave the parents alone and quit saying they are money hungry when they are nothing but great people! Lisa donates her time to the Boosters Club and Todd donates his auctioneering to various charities ~ if they were money hungry why would they help others when they are down on their luck? Come on people! It's about holding the teachers and bus company responsible! What if the bus had gotten into an accident? Or the doors flew open? Lets think of the kids SAFETY!!!

Why aren't they asking for an apology and adults involved to be fired then? They could have gone to the media right away and just stirred up trouble, but they're looking for a check.

You are correct that it was a huge safety issue but turning this into a massive payday a full year later doesn't change what happened.

The school could have very well avoided this lawsuit if they would have agreed to have a meeting with the parents, giving them some answers and taking some responsibility. Not unlike Jay Plese to make such an idiotic decision. The family should be asking for his ridiculously high $180,000 plus salary as damages. This family is not looking for a "quick pay day," they are looking for justice, and one way or another at the end of this lawsuit many questions will be answered, and I'm sure new policies put into place. For those few people who know the true facts of this situation it is completely understandable. This should NOT be something a little girl has to deal with!

They were asking for that and changes to be made for the last year! Things aren't always what they seem in the "media" making stories seem what will
Sell the most papers! Bottom line is a child was put in harms way and whether they were asked to go before they left is a moot point at this part in the game!

If they were asking for the justice an apology would suffice. They just want $$$

Doors accidentally flew open? Squirrel ran out in front of the bus? A buzzard hit the windshield and piss got in the bus drivers eye. What else dis we miss over the last year. Lol. What a nut you are.

Where were they asking for these changes? They didn't go public until they were looking for money.

BTW, the media in no way has implied they are just looking for money, that's the obvious connect the dots answer.

Please stop attacking the parents and making crude remarks about this poor child peeing anywhere. I am so horrified that this little girl was made to to this. It's a violation and it will be with her the rest of her life. Not something you get over. Horrible is what it is. I would sue too if for no other reason than nothing is being done about the dispatcher, the teachers. Even if this child had used the bathroom before the bus left, sometimes you have to go again and can't hold it. There are medical reasons that can cause that. I just pray this little girl can move on from this someday. I believe in carma. What comes around goes around. Maybe the best thing would be to have those teachers, the driver and the dispatcher all have to have someone hold up some coats and have them pee in a cup with a bus full of people, then drive up the road and have to get out and empty it. That would be pretty fair. God help this child and her parents.

You cannot stop the bus for every kid whenever they say they need to use a bathroom. Period. A trip to Chicago would take three hours. I've seen people suggest they stop the bus and have everybody go then, but that doesn't solve the problem either because the same thing could happen with another kid after this hypothetical "one stop only."

If a kid has a medical condition, which there is no evidence of in this case, then that's something different. IMO, in that case you need to get a charter bus with bathroom on the bus. Ultimately that is most likely cost prohibitive to a town like Wilmington, so then either that kid can't go and the school gets sued for discrimination, or the more likely end result, no more field trips anywhere, any time, for anybody.

This kid could probably "move on from this" really easily, and probably already had since it happened over a year ago. Then her parents splashed the situation all over the media. She'll be fine with her free college education her parents are suing for.
