I was looking for a good local place to bank fish with children.
I'm not a member of any of the local clubs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Along the Kankakee River along Route 102. Or try Mazonia State Park.

Make sure everyone has fishing licenses. You can get those at Angelo's in Wilmington.

Just a word of caution, please make sure that if you bank fish in an area that looks like it would be ok, check first. We live on the Kankakee River on Old River Road and have had people think that they can just walk down the stairs of my home, through my yard and down to the bank to fish. Or start up river from us and just walk across our land, without permission, to get to another place to fish. So if you see houses around the area, just be polite, knock on the door and make sure they don't own the property you are about to fish on. Thanks.

Seriously??? Would you want people walking all over your property. Most of the time they leave their garbage behind. A little courtesy would be nice.

opinion 91 ......... um u do not own the land of any area of the river that has been flooded in the last 50 years.... the army corp of engineers does. I live RIGHT ON THE RIVER myself and I know.

I would further say that police will side with the landowner in most regards...... not necessarily the court though.

Yeah the government owns the land in fron of ur house too. Between the side walk and the street. Ppl let there dogs crap in my yard all thr time. Then they smear it around and pick it up with a bag occasionally. Then i have a nasty fly infested poop stain in my yard.

Ian, I have no idea where you got your information from, but it is wrong. This property has been in the family since 1950 and has NEVER been owned by the Army Corps of Engineers. It belongs to our family, right up to the edge of the river. It is not the CoE that will get the money when we have to sell due to the Illiana coming through our living room and according to all the lawyers we have talked to, it has been ours since it was bought all those years ago.

If you can prove what you are saying is correct, show me where because no one owns what is here but us.

Over the top? I think not. How about I come to your house, pull in your yard, get all my camping gear out and camp out on your front yard for a couple of days? Or have a picnic on your front porch. Get on my 4-wheeler and crack a beer? Give me a break, this is my home, my property, and I have a right to my privacy where I live without having a bunch of people think they can just stand in my yard and do what they want.

It is called river rights........ all navigable waters in the entire US are owned by the ACOE. To prove my point go dig out along the rivers edge of "your" river and see how fast you get a fine. It has to do with flood protection of which they are in total charge of.

If you have lived there that long I am truly surprised you do not know. theoretically you are right as you pay taxes on it...... but they have the right to do anything they want on any part of it that has been flooded in the last 50 years. It is common knowledge to all the people around me.

Ian, having the right to do what they need to in order to help keep the flooding down is totally different than them owning the property instead of me. That puts a whole different spin on things as far as it goes.

If it was going to help keep flood destruction down, then I would not have a problem with CoE working around the property where I live.

I apologize for going off on your first reply to what I said. It is possible that my husband and/or his father know of this but just have not explained all the ins and outs of this issue to me.

But it does not negate the fact that people should still ask permission to fish on private property and too many people who do not live in our area, seem to think it is ok to do whatever they want when it comes to things like bank fishing.

You did it again. Picnic on your front porch and camping in your yard
Totally understand not wanting people fishing there but you are amplifying the situation a bit. A parent looking for a public fishing spot simply looking for advice. Might add if they were polite enough to ask they probably are not fishing in somebodys back yard. Bet you know places they CAN fish and instead turned it into your personal soapbox. You could have offered suggestions for this person who simply wants to take their family fishing!!

Anyway ... getting back to the question: Try the island park in downtown Wilmington both north and south of the road. Or try the I&M State Park or the Four Rivers Area in Channahon. In those places there are main river channels to fish along with backwaters and other waters. Toss out a crawler and you could catch all sorts of different fish.

But managing for flood is different from letting someone trespass on your land. The state could put riprap on your river-side property for example but that doesn't mean the public could sit there and fish. Two different classes of use.

On Rt 53 right outside of Braidwood there is a place that charges daily rates for fishing. It is on the east side of Rt 53. and a little way past the Braidwood Rec Club.

Go out to goose lake and fish. They have several areas you can fish.
