What happened is sad..the son will have to live with what he did for the rest of his life. Having gone through domestic violence myself, THANK GOD NO MORE, but everyone should keep their hands to themselves. Sometimes it comes to the point that something has to be done. Jimmy Shirley should have loved his wife not beat on her. Love is not suppose to hurt. To many women and yes some men live with that crap each and every day. My prayers are with Jake and
God forgive him, but he was taking up for his mother!!!!!

Jake Shirley is a loving, wonderful man. We were childhood friends and our families have been friends for years. He is NOT a VIOLENT cop so please refrain from juding people you do not even know!! This is such a horrific tragedy and I hope that instead of people stepping up on their high horse, they can try to get their head out of their ass and see the horror that has taken place here. A family has been ripped apart!! A wife has lost her husband that she loved dearly and a son, who after this will never be the same. Please keep the Shirley's in your prayers. My heart goes out to you Brenda, Jake and everyone who knows and loves you. We ARE here for you, and we WILL be here for you.

Wow, A person is crooked for protecting their mother? What?!?!? Oh, wait, I forget most of you just leave negative comments for the "Shock Value". This most likely is not the first time this man physically assaulted his wife. Who know how many times their son witnessed this abuse. This has nothing to do with being a cop, this has to do with a child protecting his mother. All you wife beaters out there, beware!!!! Eventually your children or your spouse will say "Enough" and make it STOP!!!!

For the Shirley's, Although we do not know each other, I will pray for you. You do not have to protect him anymore. Jake, be strong. I for one believe you did what was necessary.

To DEEdeeDEE, I am so glad someone else sees this tragedy as I do. I wish I had had someone here in Lovington to help me when I was used as a punching bag for a drunk who thought he had a right to lay his hands on me. Thanks to Jaymie Black, through her I found the courage to press charges and stick to them and put my abuser in jail. My heart really goes out to all the families who are in a trap they think they can not get out of..it is REALLY HARD TO ESCAPE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. And usually it is the other way around, the abused looses their life. Be strong Jake and Brenda, God Be With You!!! I strongly believe that Jake did what was necessary. It is horrible, but this domestic violence thing is way out of hand. I don't think he should do any time. He will be doing his own personal time. And anyone who condemns him for protecting his mother should have his head examined. It is not at all about being a cop or ex-cop. And yes, there are a few good cops out there, but there are alot of Judges who do not know the time of day.

it appears to me that the lead in for this story should not be that jake is an ex-cop but the multiple 911 calls that the city seemingly couldn't get to......there's no message in any stories i've read that jimmy shirley was a terrible family abuser and had been on a rampage in the last several weeks....again, the city of lovington has to bear some blame here....

I think yes Jake did what he had to do!
He probaly did more likely go though this when he was a child! And yes it comes to a point that some-one say's enough is enough! I argee with the person say's beware your children will come and get you when the grow up or even your wife or girl-friend. It all comes back to them bad people!

he killed his father,

no matter what though, it is wrong, he is wrong and he will definetly have to serve time...
its a sad thing yes, but he should have thought before he did that.... im more than sure there could have been a way to avoid this...i guess we all know why he is an "ex cop"

i use to live in new mexico, and believe me when it comes to domestic violence the cops have no clue as to how to handle the situation. i was arrested and held without bond for 46 days in the lea county detention facility because my ex had broken MY "order of protection". women have no rights in lea county. the crooked lawyers, cops and judges are too numerous to count. that situation got out of hand and the cops should've done something before it ended so tragically. they need training on how to handle domestic disputes, but no one wants to admit it. and until they do, these killings will continue.

My heart goes out to your family, Taylor. My family hung out with the Shirley's all the time in Wyoming and still kept in touch. My dad worked with Jim at Exxon so they were pretty close until they both left Exxon. This is such a horrific tragedy and I am very sorry. We are all praying for them

How can so many judge a situation or person you know nothing about... the fact he was a policeman is NOT THE ISSUE here...

We know none of the facts... other than it must have been a very desperate situation for him to do this... how do we/you judge anything at this point other than it's very sad for all involved! May God Be with Everyone to help survive this horrible tragedy...
