Dems to hold monthly meetings in Chaparral
By John Bear

POSTED: 10/07/2013 07:36:53 PM MDT

Chaparral is so far from Alamogordo, the seat of Otero County, that once a person arrives, he or she is pretty much in El Paso.

But the Democratic Party of Otero County wants residents of the oft-mispronounced, unincorporated community to feel more included.

DPOC is set to begin holding monthly meetings in Chaparral, the first of which is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. inside the Otero County Fire Station, 827 Luna Street.

DPOC Chair Nadia Sikes said Otero County Clerk Denise Guerra is scheduled to attend the meeting Thursday.

Guerra said she had been invited and plans on attending, adding that she would attend events for either Republicans or Democrats because she is here to "serve the voters of Otero County."

She said she plans on talking about county commission-approved precincts and polling places, third-party voter registration, poll workers and her future plans for elections.

Sikes said the monthly Chaparral meetings were spurred on by long waits at precincts during the last presidential election, some people standing in line for four hours to cast their ballots.

She said ProgressNow New Mexico at one point brought pizzas to waiting voters in an effort to keep them from leaving.

A prior Daily News story said that with a population of about 15,000, Chaparral is split between Doņa Ana and Otero counties. Those on the Otero side were at least

80 miles from the early voting center in Alamogordo, Rep. Nate Cote said.

This led to long lines on Election Night last November. As the numbers of voters in Chaparral swelled, the election judge called the sheriff, alleging those waiting to vote were unruly.

Nonpartisan volunteers said the charge was false. They said deputies put up yellow crime scene tape around the polling place and threatened to arrest them for providing water and chairs to voters enduring hours-long waits.

Guerra said voters statewide faced long lines during the last election, not just in Chaparral. She said an additional election board in Chaparral might lessen those waits.

The state Legislature passed a bill that requires each precinct to have its own election board, she said.

Chaparral had only one for its two precincts and Guerra said she was following the law by adding another.

Sikes said currently there are only two precincts in Chaparral and one voting center for both, but added there will most likely be at least one day of early voting for the primary election to be held next June.

Guerra said if a resolution passes the county commission on Thursday, there will be "mobile" voting in Tularosa, Cloudcroft and Chaparral next year for the primary election to be held June 3. Mobile voting, should it become a reality, will be held on May 31 in Chaparral.

Sikes said state Democratic Party numbers show about 700 registered Democrats living in Chaparral as opposed to about 250 Republicans.

She would like to see more Democrats registered in the area, though she added that third-party voter registration workers will be happy to sign up anyone to vote, regardless of political affiliation.

Of course she wants more democrats to register, instead of gettting more registered voters. Her motives are clearly visible.

She should work on getting the state of New Mexco to give Chaparral back to Texas and let them deal with all of their own illegals.

The last two poorly written paragraphs were not the words of the ADN Reporter John Bear, but the manipulator and plagiarizer, Land Locked Sailor, who makes up phrases damaging to others in order to make himself appear clever.

Paranoid much Loony Larry? LOL!

The Quote of the Decade:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America 's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

Dear Gorky, you have yourself on Topix been accused many times of plagiarizing yourself...

So show me where i have on this thread. The last 2 paragraphs are mine, pretty obvious even to you, So show me.....where i have plagiarized, because making up poorly worded sentences is not plagiarizing.

Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and "purloining and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions," and the representation of them as one's own original work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism

Sailor, please accept my apologies for accusing you of plagiarizing. I was too hasty and I was wrong in accusing you.

However, I will say that your using John Bear's name on something you wrote, even a single paragraph, makes you vulnerable to a law suite for using his name without permission for an exploitative purpose, such as putting his name in a bad light. I doubt that he would, but you never know.

Apologize under your own name. You know how silly you sound with that little rant. You make my moniker look weak and pathetic. I am going to sue you if you don't change your topix name..
