I just want your opinion on this 'incident'

I'm a retro kind of guy, laid back and comfortable with myself, and perhaps a step behind the times, certainly not a "product" of the 21st Century...
Anyway, close to noon time today I was pulling into the Closter shopping center looking for a parking spot. I came to a stop allowing a short, middle aged man to walk across with a couple of his kids. My bare, pale hands were resting on my steering wheel at the standard two and ten o'clock positions when, on the spur of the moment, probably thinking of my childhood, I pointed my right hand finger--Not the middle one--(still on the wheel at the time)in a "shooing" fashion, which 2 seconds later formed into a kiddie "gun" pose (with my thumb extended back). Two seconds later I was Silently mouthing "pow-pow!" at the father and kids, who had crossed to the other side, and I turned and found a parking space.
The entire exchange was maybe 10 seconds or less.
Locking my car, I stepped out and started walking towards my destination store when the man began to close on me. Very angry and screaming something along the lines of "What the F--- do you think you're doing pointing your fingers at little kids like a gun...! Did you even know there was a Cop there! I should call him and turn you over...!!" Blah Blah Blah.
Meanwhile I'm looking at this guy like I just entered the Twilight Zone or something. Either he did or I did. I tried to explain:
"Hey, look, it's just a finger. It's a part of my hand, see? Not loaded. Not lethal..." He ignored me and went droning on and on mad as hell. "Look, I've pointed my fingers at kids all my life since I was a kid. Go ahead and call the police and have me arrested! Make a fool out of yourself!"
But by this time I had walked suffiently far away from this guy and he was walking away from me.
It shook me up for hours. Why? Because am I so naive that I was in the wrong, in this post-9/11 period to act so irresponsibly, being the retro 1970's-guy I am?
Or was this just a short-tempered yuppie jerk needing a reality check? Today's kids' games alone are more violent and "gun-happy" than anything I could have imagined when I was their age.
I'm a non-threatening guy. Heck, I wasn't wearing gloves nor rings or Anything on my hands which could be, in any way or form, construed to be a "weapon"...
Perhaps I should have allowed him to call a policeman to "straighten" me, him, or the both of us out. It at least would have given me closure on this event, one way or another.

Pay it no mind, Mr. T.
He was probably just another one of those New York scumbags. Offhand I'd guess a short-tempered Italian American (ala DISCOVERY CHANNEL's Car Fellas show).
Rude and looking to place blame on innocent passersby.
That guy will probably make a fatal mistake one of these days when he decides to crap on the wrong person. You're just unfortunate not to be around to see the fireworks fly!
