Rock Tops - part 1 wrote:
Here’s how the Rock Tops, Inc owners, Bob Gasiorowski and Robert Charlie Theide,(missing for the last week of business) addressed their employees about the closing…they didn’t. On Friday, December 19, they called via telephone from some other location and had a manager tell everyone to leave the building. He didn’t say we were laid off or out of business. It was apparent the way they conducted business that it was a foregone conclusion. The owners didn’t run the business, it ran them. If you had any business background, you were perplexed by their business sense. Managers were employed that didn’t have any leadership qualities; nor did they attempt to lead. There was an “every man for himself” mentality throughout the business. It was truly mind-boggling. The owners would tell you it was the economy that brought them down--wrong--it was themselves. No management structure and No business foresight. Locations were kept open that were not profitable. The idea of “he who has the most store locations wins” ultimately loses. Approximately ninety percent of their business was from Ohio to Georgia. So they open a second plant, in Michigan, just 60 days prior to closing their doors. Outstanding foresight, Great location. That’s a darn good financial move to increase your shipping costs. When there were product issues, customers waited weeks to months for a remedy in part do to the distance. A central hub location down south would have decreased shipping expenses, in addition to reduced labor, real estate costs, and turnaround time. Their computer network wasn’t even close to a work in progress. It was embarrassing how the system was constructed. Who pays an IT person six figures a year and has a network that would have a difficult time keeping pace with a delivery system carried out on horseback? You could have contracted an IT person periodically throughout the year for a quarter of the cost. The pay structure was atrocious. The pay did not reflect ability of position. Who pays one cnc programmer six figures and another one literally a few dollars above minimum wage? Who pays measure personnel 65K plus including benefits? No disrespect to the people who filled these positions or received this level of pay, but these jobs did not warrant this level of pay. This disorganized pay structure existed and it aided in decreasing the profit margin. There were discrepancies in every department. The good ole boys network was in place here; this was a part of the contributing factors that led to Rock Tops demise.
Don't know where you get your figures but you are wrong. No disrespect but you obviously got the pay you deserved.

I used to Work there too - Bob is the Scum of the earth. People who think they actually care - your totally wrong! We steal the shirts of their own mothers backs!
I KNOW For A FACT - they used to pay themselves over $15,000 a week through their payroll! Where did all that $ go?
I can NOT BELIEVE that no criminal charges were filed!

We had Rock Top instal countertops last summer. All was fine until yesterday when the sink fell. I questioned the install at the on set but thought it was ok. NOT. I'll have to get the dright glue and put it back together. I'm glad I got the work in befor the bottom fell out. I wish you all well.

Please be AWARE! They have opened another countertops store, and soon to be a few more, in your area. Word has it they are near their old location in Macomb. I am an ex employee, and i do not want to see anybody get scammed by these guys again. The name of the new store is Surface Encounters! Please tell anyone who is interested in getting countertops, to stay away....

They are re-opening under a different name in the same building on Roberts Rd. as the one that closed last year. The same owners are involved with Chuck Russo who was an invester that was going to buy/bail Rock Tops out before they scrooged all employees and customers. The new name of the old company is called Surface Encounters. They are sending out brochures again that look exactly like the old ones. We have already called the local news station in Columbus and we encourage everyone to do the same. Don't let these guys steal from anyone else again. Contact the attorny general as well and lets put some heat on these guys. Their bankrupcy from Rock Tops was just discharged a couple months ago, so they have been planning this for a while.

You just posted this yesterday.. are you saying they took your money on the original closing, or that they have closed for a second time?

Yes, we ordered our granite from the store in Suwanee Ga late Oct 08 and had it installed early Nov and just yesterday had the same sink problem, I guess the installers were supposed to install support brackets for the sink, of course didnt they just put epoxy and everything was fine until yesterday, oh well, could have been a lot worse as most of the posts here show....

My husband and I had our countertops installed by Rock Tops in August but we recently had to have our sink reinstalled as it "fell" away from the granite. The guy who installed it did not do a very good job - the reinstall was in November. We were told that the installer was fired. We consider ourselves very lucky that we got what we paid for but are sorry to hear of all the horror stories.

When people are purchasing actual estate it is easy to be confused by the various terms used to define those who function inside the realtor's office. However, perhaps the most crucial function to understand is that in the real estate broker as, eventually, the responsibility for just about any transaction you may enter into in the realtor office, including a house buy, is connected to this person. <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX" >

This is EXACTLY why you should NEVER pay half down for granite. It's a scam. Pay no more than five or ten percent down and 90 percent when deliverred, and if the company is not willing to do that, then you are better off without having to deal with that kind of company that's for sure.
Any granite company who charges half down and makes you wait weeks to get your product assume they are crooks.
Obviously "Joe" is not a smart business man. I mostly do exotic stonework with slabs costing $20k each. Sorry, but I'm not paying for granite for anyone's kitchen. I get 50% or whatever material cost is up front, but then again I have been in bussiness for 25+ years. I have had people screw me over the years. PS: Our policy is countertops installed no later than 10 business days from time of template. PSS: usually it is more like 3-4 days. Thanks, Frost Tile & Marble
