why is it that when a police office dies people think everyone should donate to there familys and support them.We all loose someone all the time but where not out there asking for donations.these children are receiving social securty benifits and there fathers pension im sure so reality is stop thinking the world owes you a living because where all struggling to make ends meet and there is also insurance money they received and the sale of the house im sure they are set and have more then most people have.So whoever is caring for these children use the money wisely.I'm sorry for what happened to the parents and wish the family all the best but there are people out there that do not have anything to give there children at least they have all the above thing i mentioned now it up to you to be responseable to manage there money

Alot of kids lose a parent, some lose both parents but they are not high profile and nobody comes to their support. These kids had the benefit of a beautiful home, no doubt will benefit from life insurance policies, social security, 401k, they have alot more than more and it's ridiculous to have a benefit for them. I too wish them well but money isn't going to solve their problems. Maybe they should focus on helping the less fortunate in the area.

I work with ppl who tap in & borrow from their retirements all the time, I don't know if they did & neither do you , I also don't know how quick it takes for some benefits to kick in & in certain situations such as this one if all the normal benefits apply. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just saying we might not know all the facts but everyone if they can should donate to ppl in need.

With this certain situation especially. They are mostly young and have many years ahead of them before they are able to pay their own way. College is in their future too and is expensive. If not donating to them donate to someone. I think the biggest part of a benefit in this case is for these kids to not feel alone and know that a community is there to support them in this tragedy.

Social Security Benefits are only given to a child until they are 18 and it is usually less than $200 -$300 per child which is hardly enough to support a teenager in clothes, food, etc. If the child goes on to College, the Survivor Benefits are only extended until they are 19. As far as Life Insurance and the Sale of the House goes, NONE of us are aware if there was any monies even left for the kids to share. Any proceeds from the sale of the house would have to go to pay off the Mortgage and any other outstanding debts of Mr. and Mrs. Longo. These kids were the innocent victims in this nightmare where they lost BOTH their Mom and Dad and home at the same time. This Benefit would have helped them realize the Community was there for them emotionally and showed their support for these kids. Not everything in life that is important always about money!!!!

as long as the money goes to the right place such as counseling. unfortunately the oldest son was sent out to California to live with family member prior to this tragedy and go to drug rehab for cocaine addiction. I hope the money from the benefit goes to help all the children and doesn't assist in Joe jr. purchasing drugs. The four children need appropriate help coping with the tragedy, not money as they will be set for life financially, I'm sure.

Yeah that's what ppl have in mind.... let think of a way to raise money to help a kid buy drugs.... that will help him deal with this mess. Get a life. Your insensitivity is amazing!!!

maybe the police should come up with a better way of protecting people of spousal abuse. especially when the abuser is one of their own cops. maybe these kids parents might still be alive today and we wouldnt even be having this conversation

If what you say here is true then why hasn't the family of these children said that the kids are in need? It is my belief that the kids did get the life insurance of both parents and social security is more than 200 per month per kid. You like everyone else is speculating and if the family (who are wonderful people and I know them personally) needs help with these kids future then they should say so and WE WILL HELP.

Maybe the AMA should come up with a better way to protect people of spousal abuse? Don't blame the profession, its obviously a mental issue. No spouse should be abused and SOCIETY and the COURTS AND JUDGES should do a better job of protecting these women with stronger laws and sentencing guidelines.

The Police are suppose to protect people. It just so happens joe was one of their own. i dont care what job someone holds they have no right to abuse their spouse and the point i was trying to get at is these women need better protection from their abusive husbands wether they be a cop or a mcdonalds fry cook!

Officer Longo's survivors recieved THREE TIMES HIS LAST YEARS SALARY OR ABOUT $210,000 now thats not alot divided by 4 but add her life insurance and other stuff they will have many years of interest income to add to this. Its sad what happened but I know families with far far less that survive just fine. Typical Utica, have a benefit to raise money for needy people at the Yohannadas or however you spell it! Just another reason to prance around and make people believe you care. If you really care why not toss a couple of thousand each into a bank account every year that should do it. Oh yeah, no party sorry my mistake
