Having grown up in Jackson in the early 60's and returning years later, I found little has changed. Hatred is rampant. Racial, sexual, you name it, you can hate it in Jackson,Ms. My advise to all minorities that have the nightmare of living there is this: Get an education, a good one, and move. Raise your children somewhere else. As for myself, I am still a recovering Baptist having been fed hatred by ministers and actually seeing some of the so called "deacons of God," actually turning away African-American church goers,( the ones that wanted to worship with the "GASP," White Christians,) at one west Jackson Baptist church. How can any gay male or female even consider a normal life in a society that is truly 50 years behind in racial equality? How will these "freaks of nature," be treated by the God fearing Christians of Jackson Ms??
When I heard that Lance Bass of Clinton,Ms. had "come out," the only thing I wondered was: "I wonder how long it is going to take him to sell his home and get the hell out of that state."
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender people, there is life outside of "the land of cotton." My years at Southern Miss. were some of the best I have ever had. One month after I graduated, I was gone......I've never looked back. Christ is in my heart and I realize that the times that I thought he had left me, he was actually carrying me. Friends, being gay and growing up in Jackson in the early 60's I felt as if I was carrying a deep dark secret that would mean being unloveable/having to be careful but ultimately getting hurt in relationships anyway, ect. Through years of thearpy, and leaving Mississippi, the clouds lifted. God came into my heart and I will be able to stand before him and know in my heart that there are some things that one has no choice over. Eyes, hair, siblings, family, and orientation. My self-hatred was only enhanced by the clergy enforcing the "fellow church goers," that homosexuality was indeed a sin that would lead to a abnormal lifestyle and eventually hell. Gay brothers and sisters, you have been through enough hell just being there. Take the first big step. Leave the hating to the wonderful bigots of Jackson and find a new life and eventually a new respect of yourself and your differences. God really does love us. Hold your heads up, if you are in a drug or alcohol lifestyle, get help at Hinds Behavorial Health Servces on Highway 80. The best doctors and thearpists that can be found anywhere. They will help you see that you have paid your dues.....
Good luck to all of you.....the hardest part is the first step. Live with an out of state relative, live in a car, live in a shelter. You will at least be living. You will not be living in Mississippi.
God Bless All Of You. As for Mississippi? The entire state and ALL its people are in my constant thoughts and prayers. You see my friends, I forgave, but I will never forget.
