As an ex Clintonian, I would like to say, "WTF!" The South end of the town looks like a slum! Has ADM purchasing up most the homes along Camanche Avenue and in South Clinton caused this problem??? Houses and buildings boarded up everywhere! Homes remaining aren't fit to live in!!! Doesn't anyone see or care about this situation? If it doesn't affect you, it doesn't matter? How do you think the residents in these areas feel right now? I grew up on Liberty Avenue. I have been gone along time but it saddens me to see how a town can "DIE". If ADM started this buyout, they should be forced to finish what they started and tear down these empty buildings and homes. They should be forced to buy out the remaining homeowners so they can relocate as soon as possible!! No one else is going to buy a home in a neighborhood where you only have empty boarded up buildings!!! Is the town closing it's eyes for the sake of one employer? These living conditions are unacceptable. It just is very sad to see!

ADM and I believe the city too, bought up some houses around there to expand the factory and to move the road. MANY people were against the ADM buyout and there were protests and all sorts of yelling. And then if those people didn't get offered the big money ADM was offering the properties it wanted, they boarded up and moved, pouting. ADM needed a specific amount of land in a specific area, and they bought it. It's absolutely ridiculous to say that they should buy other property just because the actual property owners abandoned their houses in shambles. I don't know how long you've been away for, but I was down there 13 years ago, before the ADM buyout, and the place was a ghetto then too.

It is more ridiculous to me that ADM bought out random houses leaving whole neighborhoods in shambles. And I personally know some elderly people who have not been offered to be bought out by ADM and are living in these terrible conditions. I guess ADM is waiting for them to die so they can get the property even cheaper. That is ridiculous to me!

Maybe they didn't need all of south Clinton. Why should they be obligated to buy property they don't need?

Why should they be allowed to destroy the lives of elderly people by destroying neighborhoods? Why should they be allowed to build right up to someones back door? Would you want your home to be next door to ADM? Who else will buy that home from them now? NO ONE! They are stuck and their property value is now depreciated even more than before. Most of the elderly don't have an option or financial ability to leave their homes and rent somewhere else living on a fixed income.

South Clinton was never a great neighborhood anyway. It's not like it was full of manicured lawns and picket fences and then big bad ADM showed up and wrecked it. Clinton Corn has been dumping soot and stink into the area for decades, and the fact that they are expanding and adding jobs isn't a blight that I can see. Yes, it sucks for the people whose houses didn't get bought. But the area was in a downward spiral anyway and no one was fighting to buy houses down there before. It's bad luck for the elderly left behind, but owning a house there was bad luck anyway.
You still haven't explained, though, why any business should be forced to purchase property it doesn't need.
