what is the meaning of ppl riding around in cars with cardboard tags that have this written on them: "tag applied for"? How does one "apply" for a tag? We recently bought a vehicle, took the paperwork to the tag office and paid tag, title, tax fees, and they handed our tag to us. How are these cardboard tags legal and what do they mean?

They are called "drive out tags" and are supposed to only be legal to the date that is written on them (30 days).
